Canton Spanish teacher, Danielle Gallagher, and her husband Jason chaperoned the group during the trip. They departed from the Newark Airport on June 15th for an overnight flight to Paris. There they met the connecting flight and arrived in Rome at 12:00 PM due to the six-hour time difference. They met the tour guide and took a walking tour of the city. Sightseeing included the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon. Day Two consisted of visiting the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Vatican City (Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica).
On the coach bus they were able to see Rome by night and also passed by Argentinian Square where Caesar was killed. Day three involved several hours of driving through the Italian countryside and a stop in Assisi before reaching Florence. In Assisi the students saw St. Francis Cathedral and enjoyed the relaxed setting with spectacular views.

The evening in Florence consisted of a walking tour with stops at the David statue, Ponte Vecchio, and Duomo. Day four began with another long drive to Lucca, continuing on to Pisa in the afternoon. They of course enjoyed taking “touristy” photos by the leaning tower, seeing the inside of the baptistery, and shopping for souvenirs at the many stands along the street. They boarded a night ferry at Civitavecchia to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Barcelona. It was a 20 hour “ordeal” that resulted in a little bit of sea sickness for some of the group members. Day six was their free day in Barcelona and called for some much need relaxation time on the beach. They tried Tapas, a Spanish tradition, for dinner. The next day, the students went on a tour of Park Guell and saw the outside of La Sagrada Familia. They even took a cable car ride to see the entire city from above. The evening was wrapped up with some shopping on Las Ramblas and a Flamenco dancing show. The following morning, they took an AVE train across the Spanish landscape to the capital city of Madrid.
They had the chance during the afternoon to see some famous artwork in the Prado Museum. The last day in Europe was full of more sights such as the Bull Fighting stadium, the Madrid Futbol (Soccer) stadium, the Reina Sofia Museum, and Puerto del Sol, as well as a tasty treat at a Chocolateria.
Departure began at 5:30 on June 25th when they all left the hotel where they had spent their last European night. A bus took them to the airport where they said goodbye to the other groups and tour guide. They flew on a shorter flight to Paris and rushed to make the connecting flight home. The students enjoyed their experience and came home with a new perspective on American culture along with many treasured memories of being together, and hopes of returning someday.
