By Richard & Joyce Pratt We had some changeable weather this week with March wind still around. Rainy days even some snow. Thursday and Friday some nice warm weather especially on Friday, warm enough to make the gardeners want to get out working in the flower beds, etc.
I see spring flowers coming out in many of the gardens, already. But Saturday it was cold again; more winter coat weather. By Richard & Joyce Pratt Winter seems to have a hold on our weather yet. Even some warmer weather is promised next week. Some are thinking the old saying about March weather in like a lion and out like a lamb should be changed this year to in like a lion and out like a lion. We have two more days. We will just wait and see.
Last week Richard had the Sunday night church service with a message from Psalm 5 "God is always listening. Shirley Young played the piano. By Richard & Joyce Pratt Spring has finally started to show. The snow is mostly gone leaving flooding from the melted snow and rain.
Our grandson Scott tells us the sap has been running pretty good this past week. Tulips and spring flowers are starting to peek through the leaves and snow. Pastor Richard Noggle reminded us Sunday night that Easter is only three weeks away. By Richard & Joyce Pratt Well, it finally looks like the winter weather in breaking so that the sap will start running and make the maple syrup producers happy. Quite a different operation today, when you look at all the tubing and expensive equipment of today compared to buckets and hurry home from school, go out with horses and bobsleds all around the sugar bush to empty each bucket and bring into a tank to boil down in the open sap pan over a hot fire usually made up of old pine stumps that were quite popular in fence rolls in their day.
By Richard & Joyce Pratt Winter is still hanging on with the wind still blowing. It is blowing loose snow off the roof and the bank which is making nice new snow drifts covering up the dirty snow where it was plowed off from the sidewalk. At the same time it is uncovering the shiny crusted snow.
By Richard & Joyce Pratt Spring is just around the corner it has been nice to wake up to sunshine two days in a row. We have had several days of zero weather now up into the teens and 20s seems good.
By Richard & Joyce Pratt The weather this week has truly turned to winter weather with zero temperatures and dangerously low windchill factors as well as blizzard-like weather, Saturday. Sunday had very low windchill temperatures.
by Richard & Joyce Pratt The weather is typical January and February weather. First it is zero out then they talk about windchills and snow but I read in the Independent-Sentinel that in 1945 it was minus 16 degrees.
By Richard & Joyce Pratt We had a variety of weather this last week but what do we expect? Farm Show week is usually one of the coldest weeks of winter with temperatures well below zero. I remember several times when I was younger and could do it, getting ready to go to the Farm Show and it was 15 to 20˚ below zero.
Sincere sympathy is extended to Nancy Jennings and Cheryl Miller in the loss of their Aunt Ruth Wells. Also to Wes Perry in the loss of his mother. We missed the first storm and snow on Tuesday night but we sure got what was predicted and more Wednesday night with at least six inches. The deer are starting to come in to the bird feeder more so that the feeders are usually empty by the time morning comes around. Not only deer but squirrels as well, but it is fun to watch them.

With first cold, and then hot, weather, snow and freezing rain, who knows what is next. The calendar says that Christmas is coming soon so we can expect winter weather and everyone wants snow for Christmas. We wish to apologize for not having any column last week but we both were sick and are now on the mend. Many enjoyed a delicious, free, Thanksgiving dinner, fixed and put on by Tamie and Dave Storrs and family from the Family Haven Church, for all who had no place to go and enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day; and all who came in and enjoyed it appreciated it. A very special thank you to the Storrs family. It was wonderful. Pastor Storrs read the Thanksgiving Psalm (Psalm 100), and later a Magic Show was performed by one of the sons in the family, after all had a chance to enjoy dinner. It's hard to say whether it's winter or fall yet with temperatures in the low teens and with windchill it made it much lower. Today it is 60 degrees. We have had snow but usually melted before noon. We complain, but remember Buffalo with 7 to 8 feet of snow.
Julia Beach's sister Ellen Gumbest and son Clyde were in town to visit last week. Bob and Julia Beach, and their sons Wayne and Thomas and families, along with Vivian Kie all had lunch at the Iron Skillet with 11 present some of them returned to Hillcrest for a afternoon with Bob and Julia. It sure seems like winter is here to stay with cold and wind chill factors as well as snow Thursday night so that the towns were white with snow and Friday most of the day. Another sure sign of winter, the deer and the squirrels are trying to beat the birds to the feeders. The birds have to get there as soon as you fill them in the morning, because the squirrels will start working on them later and the deer will empty them in the night.
Speaking of the deer, we had a real nice 10-point buck standing on the hillside across the sidewalk from our kitchen window, today. I guess we know that winter is coming with low temperatures and wind chills. Snow last week and more forecast later this week. We can't change the weather, so we better brace ourselves and prepare for it.
Residents are reminded not to forget our catered Thanksgiving dinner this Saturday. I always look forward to those catered dinners by Fran Martin. I guess others do too because we have 26 reservations for it. We want to welcome Jeane Monroe to Hillcrest in Apartment 120. Stop in and say hi to her. By Richard and Joyce Pratt
The weather is sure letting us know that winter is coming with temperatures only getting up to low 40s and talk of snow in some areas. Sincere sympathy is extended to Bob and Julia Beach, also Vivian Kie in loss of Julia and Vivian's brother Paul Darrow. Many attended the fire meeting last Tuesday. Two members of Western Alliance were present to discuss emergency situations etc. It was suggested that each resident should post an up-todate medicine list on the refrigerator where ambulance personal could find it easily to be prepared for an emergency situation. |
