By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Senior Citizens Meeting on May 7th opened by announcing who picked the correct Kentucky Derby winner at our last meeting. Walt Brudnik, Jr. was the only one who picked American Pharoah.
Several people have May birthdays including Lester Maynard who will be eighty-eight on the 11th. By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Senior Citizens met on April 30th and enjoyed sunny weather for those who walk. It was Derby Day in honor of the Kentucky Derby which is being run on Saturday, May 3rd at Churchill Downs, Kentucky. Several of the ladies wore fancy, flowery hats. They looked very springlike.
Next Tuesday, May 5th, is the volunteer dinner in Towanda for those who signed up. The EMTA bus will pick up members at 2:30 p.m. in Gillett and 3 p.m. at Tops in Troy. Mary brought cupcakes in honor of the April birthdays. By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Senior Citizens enjoyed a sunny, warm morning walk on April 16th, for those who wished to participate. Several members are faithful in bringing homemade snacks to enjoy with coffee.
Following coffee and exercise, we were entertained with a vocal program by Maria Lock from Elkland, PA. She is available for vocal music programs if others wish to contact her for a date.. The monthly Site council was held and opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord's Prayer. President Helen Mickley conducted the meeting. For new business she announced that the yearly Craft Fair would not be held this year due to lack of help. In order to raise the money needed to pay for heating and other expenses which the proceeds from the fair usually took care of, we will have an expense box for each member to donate a dollar a week. The Easter egg hunt last Saturday, April 4th, was a success with approximately twenty children participating. We also welcomed two other ladies. Barbara Barrett, who is coordinator of volunteers for the Bradford County Heritage Association, and Margaret Winder who is another volunteer. By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Senior Citizens finally enjoyed a day that looks and feels like spring with temperatures around 60 degrees.
A walking group was formed and took the first walk of the year around town. Many in the Center were filling eggs with candy in preparation for the children's Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 4th starting at 10:30 a.m. Children from toddlers to ten are welcome to participate. By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Seniors finally were able to meet again after three weeks of cancellations because of weather, leadership meetings and frozen sewer lines.. .Mary McKerrow called the meeting to order and reminded everyone that more individually wrapped Easter candy is needed for the children's Easter egg hunt on April 4th. The items in the gym must be packed up and gotten rid of before the hunt. Melba Campbell will call the Harrison Valley Children's Home as they advertise to come and pack up and take things like that away. Members on the committee are Paul White, Lois Harper, Helen Mickley and Mary Mc Kerrow.
The Gillett Senior Citizens warmed up with exercises to open their meeting on January 29th.
Mary McKerrow made some announcements. Fran Martin will be catering our Senior-Night-Out which will be here at the Senior Center on March 4 from 4-6 p.m. By Anna Belle Leonard The attendance was down on January 8th at the Gillett Senior Citizens due to the unusually cold weather. The sun was shining and the roads were fairly good, but the temperature was close to zero.
Our leader, Mary McKerrow, was absent due to surgery in her family so Robin Vanvalkenburg substituted for her. National homemade bread day inspired several members to bring fresh baked breads for morning enjoyment with coffee at the Gillett Senior Citizens meeting on November 13th.
There was no exercise class because of the chilly weather, but next week the group will begin exercising with a chair dancing routine. Several members of the Gillett Senior Center celebrated Halloween at the Center. They were Melba Campbell, Helen Antes, Lynn Maynard, and Helen Mickley. They wanted to remind everyone that their Christmas Shop will be open soon. You can stop by and get those holiday gifts and cards from 9:00 to 1:30. Halloween was the theme for the Senior Citizens meeting on October 30th. A few dressed up and paraded around the room to show off their costumes. Some brought candy and other Halloween goodies. |
