At the June 24 meeting of the Troy School Board, the board adopted a General Fund operating budget for the 2015-16 school year in the amount of $23,518,873 with a Real Estate tax levy of 38.90 mills (3.890 per $100 of assessed valuation) an Occupation tax levy of 1600 mills ($160.00 per $100 of assessed valuation); a per Capita (ACT 511) tax levy of $5.00; and a per Capita (Section 679) tax levy of $5.00. There will be a Discount of 2% for real estate and occupation taxes paid within two months of the billing date; a Penalty of 10% for real estate and occupation taxes paid after four months of the billing date. The budget also has a Real Estate Transfer (Act 511) tax of 1% and; an 8) Earned income tax (Act 511) tax levy of ½ of 1%.
Administrators gave their reports at the June 11 meeting of the Canton Area School District Board of Education.
Superintendent of Schools Matt Gordon "commended and acknowledged all our staff, students and administrators for reaching the end of the course and successfully completing all assessments." He noted several end-of-the-year events that recognized the achievements of the students. A dinner was held for Holly Keegan, Pat Pepper and Brenda Hilfiger, all of whom retired at the end of the school year. "They will be missed," Mr. Gordon said. Administrative reports given at the June School Board meeting will be reported in the June 25 paper. The minutes of the May meeting were approved. At the regular monthly meeting of the Troy School Board, one of the voting items on the agenda was accepting the resignation of Susan Jackson as Transportation Director. Several of the board members voted no, knowing that nothing could be done to prevent it, but as an expression of regret on her retirement and thankfulness for a job well done. Other items voted on included accepting the resignations of Lyle Mattocks as girls' soccer assistant and girls' softball assistant coach; Linda Halter, 19.75 hr./week Casual Cafeteria employee; and Daniel Schwanger, Music teacher and Band Director. The board voted to pay the bills. The Troy Area School District Board of Education met on May 12 and 19.
After the opening and the approval of the minutes and finances, the board heard several reports. Principal of Elementary School Steve Brion reported a very successful "Move Up Day". He also announced "Community Days;" Kindergarten graduation on May 27th; and State Fair for Second graders, June 4. Intermediate Principal Rebecca Stanfield announced the spring concert was to be held; and sixth grade will be having move up day. The minutes of the April meeting were approved. Administrators gave their reports at the May meeting of the Canton Board of Education. Superintendent of Schools Matt Gordon said that students had finished with the PSSA assessments but the High School students are taking the Keystone Assessments. He said the tests are "more rigorous" this year, because of implementation of the Common Core standards. He commended the staff for their efforts and "positive attitude" and remarked, "our students were best prepared to take the tests than ever."

Superintendent of Schools Matt Gordon said that the Senate reauthorized the No Child Left Behind, which is called "Every Child Achieves." This will maintain annual assessments, but states can determine their own standards. Instead of Common Core, Pennsylvania will have "Pennsylvania Core." The new program will allow teacher evaluation systems but will not require them. The local legislators have sent letters to the School District advising it not to budget the Governor's proposed increase, but the Governor has advised that the increase should be used and districts should say what the money will be spent on. |
