You must first “praise” God for what He has provided for you; the way to overcome sin by sending His Son to die on the cross in your places. Sinning separates you from God, for the punishment of sinning is death, unless atonement has been made for you. God provided His Son for this atonement. The only way to receive this atonement is to turn your life over to Jesus by becoming His servant as the Scripture has revealed. God has done so much for you, He deserves your praises.
These praises are to be “to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Paul has presented a very important description of who God is. In the Old Testament God is presented as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now, He is being presented as “the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ." This makes Him the God of the New Covenant, the Church. It also does something else. It makes Jesus equal with God, the Father and therefore, shows Jesus’ deity. Jesus is fully God and fully human. Jesus left heaven, taking on the form of man, to live the perfect life being tempted in every way we are yet without sinning. The result is Jesus sacrificed His life on Calvary to pay the price for our atonement. This was necessary for individuals to be capable of reconciling with the Father. It is only through Jesus, making Him their Lord and Savior, an individual is able to arrive in heaven.
“Who has blessed us in the heavenly realms” is God, the Father. Other translations may translate heavenly places even when most early manuscripts do not have the Greek word for place there. Since, “place” is not in the original Greek where is Paul referring when he wrote In “the heavenly realms”? Much debate has been written about this. Some will say it is referring to the Church here on earth. Others will say it is in heaven where Jesus dwells. If it is here and now, then there would not be any additional blessings for you would have already received them. The key in finding the answer is the phrase “has blessed." From the time you become a Christian you receive spiritual blessings and you will continue to receive blessings when you arrive in heaven for eternity. So, “the heavenly realms” can be the Church now and in the future since it is a fact the Church will be taken into heaven. What an encouragement this is when you know as a Christian you will continue to receive blessings from God throughout eternity!
The last phrase “with every spiritual blessing in Christ” shows it is only through Jesus these blessings are possible. When you have a relationship with Jesus then “every spiritual blessing” is yours. There is no greater blessing then to have Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Consider very carefully what God has provided through Jesus and then respond accordingly!!!
