“If the world hates you” is the condition being presented. Looking back through the years to the time of Jesus Christ you will see Christians have always been hated. If you are a Christian you will be different from the world because the Holy Spirit dwells in you. Because of the commitment Christians have made to follow Jesus, their lifestyle changed; often showing up the sins of the unbeliever. The Christian is in the world, but not of the world. Those of the world will recognize the evil they are doing and will not like it being revealed therefore, they respond by hating. To encourage His disciples to be faithful, Jesus says they “hated me first." The result of the condition is Jesus was hated by the world.
The second “if” begins another statement revealing the world will love you when you belong to them. Satan is the prince of this world and desires mankind to do all kinds of evil. Therefore, he is against God. The standard of the world is difference from God. What God has called sin the world says is okay.
Jesus tells the disciples “you do not belong to the world” because “I have chosen you out of the world." The disciples were different; they had been with Jesus who taught them for three and half years the things of God. As the disciples learned they became more like Jesus in their attitude and how they thought about things. This set them apart from the world resulting in the world hating them.
Jesus goes on by asking do you remember when I taught you “No servant is greater than his master." You wonder how the disciples answered this question, “Do you remember?” In other words, are you doing the will of God, the Father? Jesus is pointing out the contrast between those who are doing His will and those who do not. Individuals not accepting the truth will persecute those who do accept the truth. Those obeying Jesus’ teachings will obey those who are teaching God’s way. This is the way it was during the time of Jesus and the early Church for those who did not believe persecuted those who did believe. Time has not changed since persecution of Christians is still taking place today. Christians will be treated this way “because of my name” Jesus says. The way you are treated will depend on whether the individual is a Christian or a nonbeliever and what your relationship is with Jesus Christ.
The key is the world did “not know the One who sent” Jesus. God sent Jesus to provide the way for all who will accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior to be with Him in heaven. If you do not know God read the Scripture and you will learn. Then obey His commands to become a Christian before it is too late. THINK ABOUT THIS VERY CAREFULLY FOR TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!
