What’s more, polls in Iowa had indicated he was going to lose by double digits just a few weeks ago. Polls in New Hampshire, the next state to hold a presidential primary, showed that Bernie Sanders was far in the lead even when he was trailing in Iowa by double digits. His lead there probably will lengthen.
On the Republican side, turnout was at a record high; and Donald Trump, the best-known candidate, the richest candidate, the candidate leading in the polls, finished a not-too-close second. The winner, Senator Ted Cruz, will be fighting in more difficult territory in New Hampshire, and the third place finisher, Senator Marco Rubio, although he did not win, greatly outperformed the polls, so has positive momentum. After Iowa, at least one Democrat and one Republican have dropped from the field. This election campaign will be one to be remembered.
