I can honestly say that I have never been trapped by a coconut, but I HAVE been trapped by other things. How about you? Many of us can be, (are?) trapped by possessions, a job, an addiction, or a relationship which acts just like the coconut. Our greed and desire for self-satisfaction leads us into a, dependence on wants rather than needs. Alcohol, recreational drugs, money, a job, another person, an expensive toy, or…can and sometimes do become overly demanding of our time and attention. Can we say, “obsession?” More often than not, these things are used as a means of security and like the trapped monkey; we are unwilling to let them go. Does something have you trapped?
There is wisdom in the old saying, “One bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” What if you knew that you could catch the, “two in the bush?” Would you let go of, “the one?” On top of that, what if the two in the bush provided far greater joy and security than what you have? Then what? It seems like a no-brainer doesn’t it? Have you considered God this way?
Jesus says in John, 8:32,35 and 36, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” Walking with Jesus means letting go of ourselves. That is, those things in life that we are still clinging to. Doing so will set us free to live the life we were born for. Don’t be trapped when YOUR time comes, let go and let God. Something to think about…
A seaman meets a pirate in a bar, and talk turns to their adventures on the sea. The seaman notes that the pirate has a peg-leg, a hook, and an eye patch. The seaman asks, "So, how did you end up with the peg-leg?" The pirate replies, "We were in a storm at sea, and I was swept overboard into a school of sharks. Just as my men were pulling me out, a shark bit my leg off." "Wow!" said the seaman. "What about your hook"? "Well", replied the pirate, "We were boarding an enemy ship and were battling the other sailors with swords. One of the enemy cut my hand off." "Incredible!" remarked the seaman. "How did you get the eye patch"? "A seagull dropping fell into my eye," replied the pirate. "You lost your eye to a seagull dropping?," the sailor asked incredulously. "Well," said the pirate, "it was my first day with my hook."
