“I am an adult, and it’s not bothering anyone else so it’s ok.” In today’s world this sounds right doesn’t it? How about, “If everyone else consents, then WE should be able to do it.” Right? I imagine you have heard the enticing phrase, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” If everyone in Vegas says it’s ok and you don’t bring whatever it is home with you, then it’s ok, right? “After all, it’s legal and so I have the right.” This is true, but does that make it a good thing? When you do come home, are you better for it? Are there consequences?
Historically, nations that have lost their moral direction have crumbled and fell. It’s just a plain fact. Why is that? It is because God created mankind, and His laws were designed for us, His creation. He made us, and knows what’s best for us. It’s just that simple. Where we get confused is where sin in the world makes some bad things feel right. Just because it feels good, doesn’t make it a good thing. Ask someone with a drug addiction or a newly informed parent in a bad situation if, “It was worth it”? Sin, (thoughts and actions against God’s desires) always carries consequences. It doesn’t, “Stay in Vegas” and “It felt good at the time” just doesn’t cut it. Prov. 14:12 says: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” God sent us His book with the guidelines for life. A life that may not always, “feel good at the time” but gives us stability, joy and victory in the end.
This problem is nothing new. The apostle Paul wrote two thousand years ago in 1 Cor. 6, “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”— but I will not be mastered by anything.” Our culture makes it more difficult to recognize this self-controlled approach. We are a, “me first” generation. Civil rights and, “This is my life and I’ll live it the way I want” may not always line up with God’s template for success. I guess it comes down to this; am I the master of my domain, or is God? Something to think about…
An angel appears at a faculty meeting and tells the dean that in return for his unselfish and exemplary behavior, the Lord will reward him with his choice of infinite wealth, infinite wisdom, or infinite beauty. Without hesitating, the dean selects infinite wisdom. “Done!” says the angel, and disappears in a cloud of smoke and a bolt of lightning. Now, all heads turn toward the dean, who sits surrounded by a faint halo of light. At length, one of his colleagues whispers, “Say something.” The dean sighs and says, “I should have taken the money.”
