At that time on the hills to the west of Keuka Lake the main highway along the lake was concrete. The road along the top of Bully Hill was dirt and the road in the middle was a blacktop.
From Uncle Leon's front porch on Bully Hill we could view the Keuka Lake and even watch the sailboat races.
On the next farm lived the Bailey family. Mary and Jim were a little older than Jane and I.
At that time, as of the present, New York State had school all of June.
Their father drove the school bus down to Hammondsport. It was a big black wooden box, pulled by horses. Everyone called it the "Black Maria".
He would take the children down to school, leave the horses and wagon at the Livery Stable and his wife Hazel would drive their model A Ford down and bring her husband home.
One day they let Jane and me ride down in the Black Maria and Hazel brought us home.
We were tickled pink.
