If you have driven by the Canton Fitness Center lately, you might have noticed my new sign and that I am looking for a few people who are motivated and determined to get body changing results. I am sure that there are hundreds of people who would like to get in better shape, but what is involved in getting results?
The ways to get results are as individualized as you are. That is not what you probably expected. Most people are looking to jump on the next diet and exercise bandwagon in hopes of getting the promised “not typical” results. That is not how I do things here at the Canton Fitness Center.
First things first. What are you doing now? We look at your life to see what it is that you are doing to see where you need to go. What do you eat? How much exercise do you do? How much general activity do you get in a day? What is your stress level? What are your sleep habits? What are you built like? All of these things play into the approach for your personal results program.
Next, I teach you to listen to your body. So many times we are so busy with “stuff” that we are on auto-pilot. We eat because it’s time or just because food was there, but not because we were really hungry. How do you feel in general? I give you some starting points to get you in tune with your body and physiological hunger.
Once you have re-connected with your body’s cues, I begin to teach you how to be a diet detective. You aren’t going to follow a “one-size-fits-all” plan. No, you will have to work to figure out what works for you personally. There are guidelines that you use to structure a plan that is unique to your needs. Why do we do this? The diet industry would like you to think that if you follow their “plan” you will get results. What really happens 95% of the time is that you do the “diet”, lose weight (maybe), you get tired of feeling deprived and you quit. The result is that you gain all the weight back. Sadly, 67% of you will actually gain MORE than you initially lost! We are going to stop that and break the diet cycle. Just think, no more jumping from one diet to the next!
As you become a better diet detective, you will start to learn about the role hormones and hormonal balance plays in body change results. If you have read the past few weeks’ articles, you learned that there are at least 15 hormones that interact to influence metabolism. We will talk about your hunger, energy levels, cravings, mood, sleep, stress and recovery as markers of hormonal balance. We will work to get your hunger and cravings under control, energy levels up and the other markers stable. Wouldn’t that be nice?
A final facet that we will work on is activity. There is general daily activity and there is exercise. General activity is all the “stuff” you get up and do in a day. This is the walking, riding bike, gardening, yard work, standing and moving as you go about your daily life. This is getting from point A to point B. It is not exercise. Exercise is purposeful. Exercise is intense. Exercise has a level of exertion involved. Exercise includes things like heavy weight training, sprinting, and interval training. The last part is rest and recovery activities. These are things that help you unwind, relax, recover and de-stress. This is very personal. It could be a slow, leisurely walk, a hot bath, flow yoga, stretching, reading, foam rolling, getting a massage, or even taking a nap! In our plan, all three components are important and play a part in your getting results.
