Place part "C" at a right angle to flange "L." Position the appropriate 2 5/16 inch fastener at location 12-A, then tighten loosely. Forget it; I say, go straight to the picture! The best teachers are the ones who "show us" how it's done, rather than tell us. In many cases, a "picture really is worth a thousand words." At least, for me it is. We would all agree that many things are taught better by demonstration and illustration.
Experience may be a good teacher, however, the experience doesn't need to be your own experience! Albert Bandura (1977) believes that individuals learn extensively by the example of others. A great deal of what we learn comes directly from watching other people whom we respect. This kind of learning has been called imitation, modeling, or vicarious learning. People go for it in a big way because it lets them learn from the failures and successes of others with no expense to themselves.
This makes all of us teachers! To be perfectly honest, most of what I know about being a minister came by watching the Rev. Orey Crippen and the Rev. Glen C. Dewey, rather than from divinity school. As a young person, it looked to me like they knew how to do it well; to this day I have continued to follow their examples in ethics and moderation. Unfortunately, modeling can also teach children inappropriate and ineffective behavior. No wonder Paul advised young Timothy to "Be an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12). When Jesus washed the feet of the disciples, he said, "I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you" (John 13:15).
Clara Pellar was best known for "Where's the beef?" I would like to be known for "Where are the pictures?" Could it be that I learned more about ministry by watching two old ministers than I did in eight years of college? It begins to look that way. Come to think about it, my early church experience consisted mainly of sitting next to Grandma Marple while drawing pictures for her --I hope Grandma was listening to the sermon.
Last Sunday, while leaving church, one of my parishioners handed me a book to read. When I got home, I thumbed through it and exclaimed to Gloria (Mrs. Marple), "This isn't a book!" She said, "Well, it looks like a book;" to which I replied, "If it's a book, where are the pictures?"
