For several weeks we had "Chubby," an immature Junco. He was a fat ball of feathers. He would feed an hour at a time. No wonder he was so fat.
Then 8 or 9 Bluejays liked their peanuts still in the shell. As I watch they quickly steal one and up in the maple tree they break it open and then back to snitch another.
We have a White Breasted Nuthatch. She looks just like the colored picture on the bird feed bag.
A real favorite is a Carolina Wren, with her long, peculiar bill. On Easter morning she had the spiritual air. She would eat a mouthful and then lift her head to heaven and sing. She did this again and again but only on Easter!
I appreciate her also because she can hop to move about. Our backporch is screened but has an open space for the cats. Often a bird will get on the porch and will try to fly out. We often have quite a time to get them safely off the porch. Carolina will come on the porch to eat some dry cat food but she knows to hop off the way she has entered.
We have an old windvane on the garage. Early one morning, wishing to know where the wind was from I glanced up at the vane. It looked very peculiar. The trouble was, I was seeing double. Instead of one black rooster there were two. A blackbird was perched up by the rooster. As the wind shifted he was getting a ride.
