Here we are again at the end of another liturgical year as we celebrate the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King. Advent and our new Church year begins on the weekend of November 30. We people of faith end this year with a celebration and a question, both of which are meant to stir our hearts.
A solemnity in the Catholic Church is the very highest of celebrations.
As we celebrate we are faced with an important question found in our reading from Matthew 25:31-46. "When did we see you?" This is the very question posed by atheists and those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. For believers we ask in humility, never considering our paltry efforts as anything more than Christians fulfilling our sacred duties. It is not us--it is Jesus working through us. However, atheists want proof and unbelievers need some sort of evidence of the Lord whom we proclaim as King.
When, indeed, did we see Him? This year alone I have seen Him in so many instances as to be uncountable. In the nearly 500 Mass I offered this year
He was clearly present in Word and Sacrament. In the Sacraments of Confession and Anointing I have witnessed His healing power. I have seen Him every season in the beauty of nature in Bradford, Tioga and Lycoming Counties where our parish is located. I see Him in your acts of dedication to Him. I see Him in your often heartbreaking struggles with suffering. I see Him in the joy and beauty of your children. I have witnessed His power and His love as our Lord, Savior and King.
He is here. Seek Him. Look. See. Hear. Feel. Find. And then share.
Prayerfully, Father Mike
