Morality and Purpose Demand the Existence of God
For without the Creator, the universe has no intended design, purpose, meaning or reason. Even man himself is reduced to a "happening", the result of the alignment of certain improbable circumstances.
Now it seems to me that a "floating" morality is no morality at all.
A change of mind becomes a change in morality. Killing becomes proper and just to the revolutionary terrorist, seeking a political scheme or a new government. Violence becomes "okay" if it supports a cause. In the end, drugs and reckless sex become the right thing for the young person seeking meaning and purpose in a world in which he or she must assume has no real meaning or purpose. Without God, purpose is just something you "make up."
The Alternative to creation and purpose is that man is an accident; if that be so, people will be willing to live a more "reckless" style of life - and who is to say whether they are right or wrong? If there is no purpose, meaning or reason for our being here - then morality is put on a distinctly lower ethical level. What will it be like when no one believes in God?
One of the best facts for faith is the teaching and life of Christ. Christ gave morality a basis that went beyond a list of rules. Christ was able to simplify and summarize the entire purpose of man in a line: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul; and love your neighbor as yourself."
In a line of practical application He said, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." In other words, real morality is based in the heart. Looking for God?
God is always the heart of the matter. God is, after all, love. Love brings out the best in us all. Prove the existence of love and you have proved the existence of God; and, who is so cynical as to deny the existence of love?
