It must have been about 1930. Housewives had some areas that were really helpful. For example, my mother ran a bill at Tripps Grocery Store. She could ring them up by phone and place an order.
To wash all our clothes, mother had two stationary washtubs under the window by the driveway. I was four and Jim was two. The adults in the family would plunk one of us in one tub and one in the other for our daily bath. Each tub had a heavy wooden hinged cover which was propped up onto the window ledge.
On this particular day we were soaking in the tubs and we heard Larry Biddle arriving with groceries. We didn't want him to see us taking our baths, so we slinked down and pulled the lids down so as to hide us.
It wasn't a very intelligent move for Larry brought in a big load of groceries and piled them on our wash tubs, more or less trapping us. Must be the adults freed us after Larry had gone.
