It is sickening that neither the Democrats in the Senate nor any of the people outraged by the accusations even pay lip service to giving Mr. Kavanaugh a fair hearing- no, they accept Dr. Ford's accusation unquestionably, even though she offers ZERO evidence; and they dismiss Mr. Kavanaugh's denials no matter how much evidence he offers.
From her own statements to the committee, the statements by her lawyers, and her letter to Rep. Eshoo (and then Sen. Feinstein) we know of at least four untruths sworn to by Dr. Ford: 1) The second door, which supposedly triggered her fears and revived her memory, was not as she asserted, for the purpose of "escaping" from a potential predator, but was a second entrance for interns staying at the home- or it was an entrance for a business. According to reports, the entrance was built in 2008 or 2009, not 2012 as Dr. Ford declared. 2) Dr. Ford's attorney's led the public to believe that her aversion to flying prevented her from testifying on September 24, and that she therefore would be driving across the country from California to Washington and couldn't testify before Thursday.
Here is a potential fifth untruth: Because of her alleged aversion to flight, the Senate committee offered to come to California to take her testimony. This information was reported by many news sources and there is a clear email chain from the Committee to Dr. Ford’s lawyers. However, Dr. Ford testified that she was not aware of the offer. Her account therefore may be another untruth, or it may be that perhaps her lawyers did not pass along the information or that news accounts were kept from Dr. Ford - that she was sequestered in such as fashion as to keep her from hearing anything about the case.
The Senate Committee treated Dr. Ford mildly. They did not raise any issues about her past, her yearbooks, her school or her behavior or her friends. The Committee treated Judge Kavanaugh harshly, dissecting his every statement, his calendar, his yearbooks, his friends and his behavior, and the Democrats sought to discover any variation from dead center.
Almost every person who personally is acquainted with Judge Kavanaugh has stoutly defended his character, his integrity and his behavior - and not one of them states that there is any possibility that the behavior claimed by Dr. Ford took place or could have taken place. The few who assert he drank to excess all deny that they have any personal knowledge of the long string of accusations flung at him.
We do not believe that Judge Kavanaugh did what Dr. Ford accuses him of. The witnesses she names declare they have no knowledge of it. No one who knows him says it is possible that he did it. And here's something else -and this convinces us more than anything else that Dr. Ford's story is not "credible": Dr. Ford claims she escaped from two inebriated men whom she feared would rape her; yet she left her best friend in the house with them; we suppose that might be possible, except for this: at no point - not that night, not the next day and not in the intervening 36 years did Dr. Ford ask her best friend if she was able to escape unharmed. Someone who managed to escape such a dangerous situation would have, and should have, at least asked her friend if she also escaped - and Dr. Ford did not. Had the incident occurred should have been concerned for the welfare of her friend.
As the charges against Judge K. wither away – the Democrats have taken him to task for reacting in a "non-Judicial temperament" at his testimony. After eleven days of false accusations piled on top of more false accusations, with no evidence for any of them, with US Senators and nationally known political and news media figures calling him everything from a rapist to a pedophile to an alcoholic to a pervert to a liar to the operator of a sex crimes ring - none of which are true - who among us could remain placid and accept such baseless assaults with equanimity? So because he reacted angrily, his attackers say it is proof he is a sex offender. Rest assured, had Judge K. "kept his cool" and responded meekly, he would have been accused of being bloodless and distant, lacking emotion, and this would have been used as proof that he was a sex offender.
We recommend one read or watch The Ox-Bow Incident, or any of dozens of other movies in which an innocent man "looks guilty" and is lynched - only to have the real criminal discovered too late. And Judge Kavanaugh does not even "look guilty" - and they are trying to lynch him. Anyone out there who has joined the stampede that seeks to trample Judge Kavanaugh, even though there is no evidence against him (only an accusation that is refuted by every witness the accuser has presented) should be ashamed of himself, and anyone who ever has to face a similar dishonest accusation had better hope that he is not judged by the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee or by the mainstream media.
We should have empathy for victims of sexual abuse or violence, but we also should be careful of the risks of the lynch mob, and we should make sure that our respect and compassion for the victim does not ignore evidence to the contrary. If someone's life can be ruined on an unsupported accusation from an incident that took place 36 years in the past, we no longer live in a democratic republic, but a police state. This episode is an appalling miscarriage of justice and no one who joined the lynch mob or the stampede should ever be trusted in any position of power.
