I’m happy to report that our trip to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville last Tuesday was a success. The orthopedics department’s director, Dr. Suk, is serving as Ron’s doctor and following his review of his latest CT scan, he concluded that quite possibly he can help Ron’s disconnected collarbone with surgery. Not a plate, not a bone or joint replacement, but rather an artificial “loop” – like a tendon, to pull the collarbone back into place next to his sternum with the hopes it will fill in with blood and scar tissue. He asked Ron about the upcoming holidays and when would be a good time to schedule. Ron said “after the firewood is all cut for the winter, and after deer hunting season. Let’s make it January”. Dr. Suk said “perfect – I agree”. He’s scheduled for a prelim appointment January 5th. Please pray for Ron’s full recovery.
I did make good on one promise I made to my husband, and that was to make him his very own batch of strawberry jam, once I had furnished my quota to the church bazaar. It, too, turned out wonderfully using berries from Lancaster County!
We here in south Alba had quite a host of “trick or treat”-ers last Saturday evening. About 30 to 35 adorable little creatures walked to our place to have a quick little treat and for us to shake our heads and say ruefully: “How can they be that old already? The kids we knew bringing their kids to visit”. We heard a report of some devilish action stealing their American Flag and Confederate Flag. (Definitely not nice.) On that note I’ll get to grumble a bit about the cost of chocolate candy bars. I like to buy the sleeve of fun size bars – the popular choices – which not too long ago were 10 to a package for a dollar. They were actually two bites worth. Then, they went to 8 to a package for a buck. Then, they got even smaller and went to 6 to a package for a dollar. This year some were even smaller and only 5 to a package for that price! They are barely one bite. Anyway, I purchased enough to dole out, and even had a couple for Ron to munch on – or, should I say nibble. I was reminded of days gone by growing up in Cowley and my folks giving out Hershey bars that in any local store today would cost around a dollar – each... Unbelievable.
The annual Fall Festival of Music is this coming Sunday evening, Nov 8th, once again hosted by the Canton Church of Christ, and again, the Troy High School Chamber Choir will be the special guests. The program begins at 7PM and will feature special music brought by the 7 churches in the East Central District (Disciples of Christ) in Pennsylvania, which includes Alba.
The weather forecast for this week includes a couple days of true “Indian Summer” with temperatures reaching into the 70’s! Wow – we’ll take it! I knew that when daylight savings time ended and it would start getting dark soon after 5pm that I would be wiped out and ready for bed by 8:00, which, indeed did happen. However, the sunset Monday was so beautiful that it encouraged me to just be thankful for whatever the weather, whatever the time.
Happy birthday to a very special lady on Sister Street – Irene Matson will be celebrating on the 10th.
November 6, 1814, marks the birthday of saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax. On November 10, 1969, Sesame Street premiered on television. November 11th is known as “Veterans Day”. On that day in 1918, the armistice ending World War 1 was signed; hostilities ceased at 11:00 A.M. On November 13, 1927, the Holland Tunnel opened, connecting New York City and Jersey City, New Jersey.
