The regular monthly meeting of Minnequa Grange will be held Tuesday, September 22nd, at the grange hall, beginning at 6:30 pm. Please bring finger foods for refreshments.
Vegetable gardens are now winding down – ours is about done, completely – and we are grateful to those folks still sending items our way from their overflow. We’ve done up more corn and I’m freezing some red peppers to put in the sweet mixed pickle I’ll make to sell at the bazaar when I get my cauliflower. And, in response to the “guy up on Sister St” about the vegetable comment at the COG dinner, he was right in assuming it came from a waitress trying to “push” the green beans. Of course we know he likes vegetables – and always has a really nice garden to support it.
I’ve seen several dead porcupines along the highways lately. I wonder if that means anything other than they’re very unlucky.
Last Saturday was a day off for me so I took the opportunity to do a little “rummaging”. I skipped up to the Columbia Cross Roads church’s sale and picked up a couple of things and asked if they would be collecting coats again this year to be given to anyone in need. They said they would so I have volunteered at our church to collect and deliver whatever could be given. I then traveled south to the Newelltown Church (below Roaring Branch) and again picked up a few items at their sale, and then headed further south to Ralston to deliver a couple of large boxes of books I’ve been wanting to donate to their book-swap library (for a couple of years) and was sorry it took so long. However, I was glad to see they had a lot of books on hand to give out to readers. I brought my treasures home and then headed to Franklindale to shop a bit and picked up two huge, gorgeous mums in full bloom, as I just could not stand it any longer. I needed to add some new fall color to the yard!
I’ve seen several ads in the local papers for “apple pickin’” so I, too, am anxious to get out and get a few. Thankfully, we have a neighbor up the road whose trees are loaded so I won’t need to go far.
Last Sunday at church the Chancel Choir was back singing the special after their well-deserved summer off. As always, it was very nice. I’m sorry I forgot to mention that last Sunday’s music was brought by DeEtta Antes – another returning favorite to the summer roster – and though I did not attend that day was told it was just great, as expected.
Ron and I will be headed to Bloomsburg next Wednesday, the first day of autumn, to set up the Minnequa Grange booth for the fair. Wish us luck!
I have been enjoying the conversations at work, at church and with home and neighbor visitors as well regarding gardening (plus the canning and freezing), fishing, farming, boating, vacationing, doing crafts, local road and bridge repairs, firewood gathering, and yes, even the weather. A topic that gets brought up quite a bit at work is that I’m related to everybody – or at least know them. That comes from us and our families having lived in this area our entire lives, so those that also still here, are familiar!
On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation was to take effect January 1, 1863. On September 23, 1879, the first hearing aid was patented. On September 24, 1869, robber barons trying to corner the gold market caused America’s first Wall Street crash.
Quote by Doug Larson: “For disappearing acts, it’s hard to beat what happens to the eight hours supposedly left after eight hours of sleep and eight of work”.
Food for thought: A coincidence is a small miracle where God prefers to remain anonymous.
