I hope you saw the lovely picture of Frances Kobbe on the front of the Troy Pennysaver and read the corresponding article recognizing this wonderful lady’s legacy of writing and ultimately publishing her own poems. She is the mother of a dear friend of ours, Carol Bastion, and I have Frances’ book and have read it through and go back on special holidays and events and reread her prose and poetry again. I must say it’s a pleasure to say I know this wonderful lady.
Don’t forget the free breakfast at the Alba Church this coming Saturday the 29th from 8 to 10am. All are welcome.
I want to wish my husband Ron “happy anniversary” – coming up this Saturday the 29th. We can hardly believe it’s our 34th – time rushes by so quickly.
The special music at church last Sunday was provided by Olivia Morse and Briana Hollenback. It was absolutely wonderful and very much appreciated as both of these gals are returning to college this coming week as well as Olivia’s sister Samantha. Tricia Hojnowski is now enrolled in her first year at Penn State and we wish them and all the young folks returning to school, the teachers, and the bus drivers well wishes and hopes for a safe and happy return to school days.
It seems once again the “concerns” outweigh the “joys” brought forward during church. Sympathies for lost loved ones, continuing battles with dreaded diseases and afflictions, and personal sad issues in general haunt so many. And yet there are many joys, too, of positive health reports, gainful employment, successful surgeries and treatments, and the hope of new avenues to seek help from. So as we continue our prayers we need to ask God for wisdom and guidance for the doctors, nurses and caregivers, and comfort, faith and peace for the family and friends and the people themselves, no matter what the afflictions may be that they are suffering from.
Our Alba Church was host to the annual COG (Community of Governments) dinner on Monday evening. A delicious meal of chicken and biscuits with all the trimmings including homemade pie (I made pecan, of course) was enjoyed by a crowd of several representatives from the various townships, boroughs and municipalities throughout Bradford County. However, I overheard that one such council person from Alba Borough, namely the Sister Street Bureau correspondent, doesn’t like vegetables. But I also heard him give many compliments to the chef(s) as well as the many others that were received as I waited on tables which were passed on to the kitchen crew.
On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C. August 29th marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast. On August 30, 1830, the B&O Railroad discontinued horse-powered locomotives.
Quote by Martin Luther King Jr.: “We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.”
Food for thought: Greatness lies not in being strong, but in the right use of strength.
