Our many thanks to everyone that made our church’s Harvest Supper a big success. Bazaar sales were quite brisk as well – thanks a lot folks. I am always amazed at the amount of food that can disappear in less than two hours! Our last sale of the season of our craft items will take place at Manley-Bohlayer on December 6th at their annual Victorian Christmas celebration.
Ron and I attended the program “Stories from Crockett Lodge” at the Rialto in Canton last Saturday, presented by LeRoy Heritage Museum President, Matt Carl. It was a wonderful event that those of us in attendance thoroughly enjoyed. We are grateful to people like Matt that are so willing to preserve our local history – which, by the way, there is very much of, if we will just show an interest and investigate. And the museum is planning an “open house” affair on Saturday December 13th where you can visit the many new exhibits displayed at the museum, and shop in the gift shop where we will also be selling some sweet confections! This is a great place to find great Christmas gifts!
One of the most “talk of the town” matters is the new Verizon cell phone tower in Canton. So much so that a friend of mine that lives in Canton had family in from out of town that was down-right giddy that they had service in Canton! Yes folks – we are really finally getting with the times.
Our church collected 51 shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child – and I believe that is a record. This is another fun project our church does to benefit those less fortunate, and the next project will be the “Baby Shower for Jesus” starting on Advent through the end of the year, with the baby items collected going to the Endless Mts. Pregnancy Care Center in Canton.
My brother Art told me an enlightening story recently regarding his outfit that was doing the shoebox thing. After collecting and doling out hundreds of them to Arizona and New Mexico, they had 56 left. They made some calls and were contacted by an orphanage in West Virginia asking for help – so, naturally, they headed off to that facility. Upon welcoming the group the head coordinator said they had “56” eager young kids to see what they brought. EXACTLY the number of boxes they had brought with them. Art and I truly believe that it was surely nothing less than “Divine Intervention” – don’t you agree?
I want to commend the youth in our community for their outstanding participation in various sports and activities in the Troy High School system since school started. And also to their parents for lending such much-needed support to their functions.
November 21, 1620, the Mayflower Compact was signed. On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas at the age of 46. On November 23, 1835, Henry Burden of Troy, New York, was granted a patent for a machine to make horseshoes. On November 24, 1874, Joseph Glidden patented barbed wire. On November 28, 1863, Americans observed a national holiday of Thanksgiving following a proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln.
I hope you and yours enjoy a truly blessed Thanksgiving holiday. If nothing else, please remember to count your many blessings, and thank the Good Lord for all that you have and all that you are. Quote by John F. Kennedy: “The Founding Fathers made an appropriate choice when they selected the bald eagle as the emblem of the nation. The fierce beauty and proud independence of this great bird aptly symbolize the strength and freedom of America.”
Food for thought: God never asks about our ability or our inability – just our availability.
