Ron and I watched the draft horse show at the fairgrounds Sunday for awhile, long enough to see Emily Ferguson place second in the “Youth 2-horse cart”, and I was told on Monday that Tom Young won the competition with the hay bales. Some kind of “scurry”, I believe. Congratulations to both of them!
Sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Alba resident Dale Saunders on the passing of his mother Hazel.
According to the television weather people (politically correct) we can expect a heat index of close to 100 degrees this week. It’s Troy Fair week – it could be cold and rainy, so let’s not complain. We received a real downpour late Sunday afternoon, and then saw how many parts of Monroeton and Towanda were flooded. I’ll consider us lucky.
Have you ever read the “Sound Off” section of the Towanda Daily Review? It’s a place where people can give their “opinions” and sound off about things – whether good or bad. I like to think that this column I write is simply a collection of tid-bits gathered and put to paper about happenings, and “my opinion”. I try my best to be factual and accurate, and quickly apologize for errors and make necessary corrections – if and when I become aware of any such errors – and I strongly encourage people to let me know when I have reported something incorrectly. However, I do NOT consider it an open door for bullying or any other such similar rebuttals. And having said that, my thanks to all the folks that give me positive and complimentary comments on this column.
The annual Shoemaker Reunion – descendants of Charles and Blanch (Welch) Shoemaker will be held Sunday August 9th at 1:00 at Joey and Ellen Foust’s cottage at Big Pond. Meat and beverage furnished – bring a dish to pass and own table service. For directions call the Fousts at 673-8304.
Here it is August already. This month is named for Augustus Caesar and once had the label Weodmonath, or “week month”. (We certainly can attest to that – we have plenty of weeds in the vegetable garden and flower beds as well). “Full Sturgeon Moon” is the name given by the Native American tribes of the Great lakes, who fished for this large quarry during August, smoking and drying some of their catch. It was also known as the “Full Green Corn Moon”. August is National Canning Month, National Fair Month, National Parks Month, and National Wild Blueberry Month. August 1, 1790, marks the anniversary of the First U.S. Census (taken every 10 years). August 1st is also “National Mustard Day”. On August 6, 1911, comedian Lucille Ball was born.
From the Wit & Wisdom Almanac: “if the first week of August is unusually warm, the winter will be white and long”.
Quote by Sam Ewing: “Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all”.
Food for thought: Since we know that the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain, may we conclude that lefties are the only ones who are in their right minds? (This writer is in fact a “lefty”, so I conclude “yes – I am in my right mind”. At times anyway…)
