We were so glad to see the election come and go, especially regarding the political calls, signage and mailings. However, would you believe we are still getting things in the mail asking to “vote for me” and I see those signs still stuck in the ground along the highway at several places in the county? So, what can we expect during the actual General Election in the fall?
I know I’ve complained several times about the prices at the grocery store and the cost of most staples in general, but this past week I was quite surprised when I decided to treat Ron with a pot of homemade oxtail stew and the cost of a couple packages (mostly bone, I might add) was over $9.00! Ron recalls back when he was working as a butcher with his dad, they threw away literally thousands of pounds of those tails. Kinda like the pig ears that are dried for dog treats. Interesting. However, he did comment that it was very delicious and we got more than one meal out of it, so I guess it’s worth it.
At our monthly Minnequa Grange meeting last week we discussed our exhibit booth for the upcoming Troy Fair and it seems we, once again, have a good topic and hopefully will come up with a very educational and eye-appealing display.
I cannot believe it is now June and with it comes all the graduations, proms and school getting out for the summer. I remember that feeling of walking from being a teenager into adulthood, and although I did not attend college it still was a bittersweet feeling of “out with the old – in with the new”. I pray that our graduates with be prosperous.
We had a lot of rain over the weekend, but before that things were extremely dry. Before heading to work in Troy last Friday, I swung around to Windfall and watered the cemetery. I was surprised to see how great it looked, actually, and was glad to see a local farmer out cutting hay and that the paint brushes wild flowers were out everywhere at the cemetery.
I see lots of different-colored rhododendrons in blossom, as well as iris and peonies. My peonies must be a little different variety as they as still tight buds but will be out in just a few short days.
Ron and I (and Palin, of course) traveled to Williamsport last Friday to get in touch with his new family physician, after we lost our beloved “Dr. K”. With all of Ron’s medical issues and all the specialists he sees, it is important for him to have a family physician. Fortunately we are very familiar with that part of the medical field in Williamsport as that is the area where a couple of Ron’s specialists are. This new doctor was nice and appeared to be very knowledgeable, however, at the same time it is NOT our Dr. K. As I said before, we are trying our best to keep an open mind. He wanted Ron to have more blood work to check some things and took away one prescription and set up some more “tests”. It was a lot to take in for one afternoon – I was exhausted, so you can imagine how drained Ron was. I was very happy when he decided we should stop in at the Midway restaurant in Roaring Branch on our way home and have a delicious fish fry. The place was packed – which we feel is a good thing in this economy – and the meal, as always, was fantastic – especially my stewed tomatoes. How can something so simple be so delicious and not be duplicated? I’m still studying… And also, it was nice to see so many familiar faces in the crowd.
And so here we are into June. June is: Dairy Month, National Candy Month, National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month, National Iced Tea Month, and National Rose Month. It was named for the Roman goddess Juno, patron of marriage and women. “Full Strawberry Moon” is the traditional name that pays homage to the sweetest of our ground fruits, especially the tiny, fragrance wood strawberries beloved by Linnaeus. June’s moon is also called the “Full Rose Moon.” On June 2, 1924, Congress granted Native Americans U.S. citizenship. On June 3, 1965, the silver in U.S. dimes and quarters was eliminated. On June 6, 1944, allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. June 6th is also known as National Applesauce Cake Day and the birthday of “Gumby” (1955). On June 8, 1869, Ives W. McGaffey of Chicago patented the vacuum cleaner. The 8th is also known as National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day and the 9th as National Jelly Doughnut Day. On June 9, 1934, Donald Duck made his first film appearance. On June 10, 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous was founded and the 10th marks the birthday of the ballpoint pen – 1943.
Quote by Oswald Chambers: “If you completely give of yourself physically, you become exhausted. But when you give of yourself spiritually, you get more strength.”
Food for thought: No one ever said on their deathbed: I wish I would have spent more time at work!
