Don’t forget the free breakfast at the Alba Church this Saturday February 28th from 8 to 10AM. All are welcome.
Our church collected a large number of items for the Troy Food Pantry in February in recognition of “Fiber Focus” month. March is “National Noodle Month” – so we will be collecting anything with noodles, or pasta.
There is so much sickness in the area, as well as many suffering from serious illnesses and afflictions. I’m asking for your prayers for all of them.
I read where February 19th was Chinese New Year and it will be the “Year of the Sheep”. OK – whatever.
The television hype this past week, besides the cold, snowy weather across half of the U.S., has been leading up to the Daytona 500 stock car race and the 2015 Oscars. These two major events – for some folks, I guess – certainly haven’t been without their scandalous and more than just a little tainted headlines and highlights. By the time you read this column both will have divulged their “winners”, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t have a clue as to who any of them are, especially the Oscars. The same holds true for the Grammy and the Emmy – I never heard of over 90 percent of the contenders. Is it because I’m getting older, out of touch? If so, perhaps it’s one of the smarter things I’ve done over the last several years.
Speaking of the weather, all I have to say is “ugh”! On Sunday afternoon the temps reached 36 degrees here – enough to melt the snow and get some patches cleared until the next wintry blast. When I talked to Jeff he said it was in the mid 70’s and had been cleaning the pool and fixing the roll-up blinds on the sun porch because it was getting too warm (???). I think actually he was just bragging… Here’s a last minute note: Before sending out this column to press Tuesday morning, the thermometer read minus 18 degrees at 6:15!!! Most certainly a record breaker!
Several folks have been out and about circulating petitions for folks in Bradford County seeking to get their name on the ballot for many positions within the county government up for re-election. I find it interesting that this time of year correlates to “sap-running” time. PUN INTENDED.
I really don’t want to wish my life away, but I will be happy to see February 2015 leave and welcome in March, the meteorologists spring, with the official first day not until March 20th. But before we leave February I feel I must tell you that the 28th is “National Tooth Fairy Day”. Hooray! Anybody that remotely believes that what is going on in this wonderful country of ours is acceptable and good SURELY must believe in the Tooth Fairy. So, here’s your day – have at it!
March was named by the Romans after Mars, the god of war, as it was a traditional time to resume military campaigns. Interesting, don’t you think? Full Sap Moon is the traditional name for this month’s full moon. Full Worm Moon, another name given, celebrates the reemergence of earthworms as the ground thaws. As I look forward to gardening, this most certainly is music to my ears. March is National Noodle Month, National Craft Month, National Frozen Food Month, National Peanut Month, and, you’ll love this one, National Pothole Month. On March 1, 1790, Congress called for the first U.S. census. On March 3, 1931, “The Star-Spangled Banner” became the official U.S. national anthem.
Quote by Francis Scott Key: “Then, in that hour of deliverance, my heart spoke. Does not such a country, and such defenders of their country, deserve a song”?
And from Ben Franklin: “Proportion your charity to the strength of your estate, or God will proportion your estate to the weakness of your charity”.
(I was right. I never heard of any of the Oscar award winners. However, we were glad to hear that Joey Logano won the Daytona 500 – driving a FORD!)
