By Rev. Kenneth Marple, M.A. People who aren't afraid of being ruined by success should get a job with the weather service these days. Even though they are bowling 300, game after game, no one is happy with them. It's not that they done a bad job; it's just that people don't like zero degree weather, even when it is predicted with great precision. The odds of predicting another storm or another dip to zero have been better than ever so far this winter. Most people don't like frozen pipes, cars that won't start, or snow-shovel calisthenics. Our forbears talked about it in general terms, saying, "When the days begin to lengthen, the cold begins to strengthen."
Years before September third 1781 when England surrendered in France setting America free and the last English soldier left America and our constitution took effect, a thief was tried here using British Law. These laws were the result of a King ruling our country.
Read the transcript of that trial found by a buddy of mine while searching for the history of a lost relative who was a soldier under General Washington. He sent it to me and I share it with you. If this kind of justice is what you want to return to our country do nothing. If you do not, get involved, in every State and Federal election. Vote for a congress and house that will fight for our constitution to be followed to the letter. by John Shaffer He might not phrase it quite this way, but President Obama’s recent proposal to make the first two years of community college “free” is another way of making college an entitlement – an expensive one at that. Because, of course, no one expects the professors or the staff or the maintenance crews or the clerks to work for nothing – or that the cost of the utility bills and loan payments and office supplies and books and everything else that makes up those two years of college will be written off. Therefore, it will not be “free.” The President of course believes that something is free if it is given to the person he wants to have it- the cost is immaterial because it will be paid by someone else.
By Bill Bower The brown marmorated stink bug is not native to North America. After leaving our son’s family on Christmas Day, we stopped to visit friends that also live in Virginia. While visiting we sat in a room with several windows from which the sun’s rays not only warmed the room but also awakened several stink bugs. The young mother kept apologizing for the presence of the bugs. However, we were quite aware of the problem of stink bugs since our daughter also had the same problem several years ago when her family lived near Lancaster. On sunny days, the bugs were on the ceilings, walls and windows. Mary Alice tells me that I sleep with my mouth open and when staying overnight at our daughter’s home, she worried that I would swallow one of the bugs. By Kenneth Marple, M.A. Babies generally enter the world crying. From that moment, they begin to learn about the world outside the womb. Crying newborns can often be calmed by simply holding them securely. Newborn babies do not have coded, verbal information (word/language); therefore, their sense of touch and their feelings are used as their primary method for collecting and processing information about their new world. Before birth, babies are held safely by the womb. After birth, that security is gone; in fact, research demonstrates that most babies who can crawl have a natural fear of falling. It is little wonder that babies tend to cry when they are not held, since they were held by the womb every day prior to birth.
By Evangelist Eric Smith “If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even a meddler” 1st Peter 4:14-15. Peter is continuing his instruction for those who suffer for Christ. In the verses we are examining including verse 16, there are three contrasts of suffering. Remember, Peter is encouraging his readers to remain faithful to Jesus because the end results are far greater then any suffering an individual may go through.
By Jim Lewis Did you hear about the Paul Revere/Sam Adams era time capsule that they recently found sealed in the Massachusetts State House? It included coins, records of the Mass. Colony, as well as some silver pieces that were actually smithed by Paul Revere himself! Pretty cool. The artifacts representing some of the foundations of our country had been sealed there for 219 years and were found in the building’s corner stone. After hearing of this, I began to wonder if these foundational documents and the cornerstone that housed them would actually exist if Paul Revere hadn’t made his famous ride. What if the defense of our fledgling nation hadn’t been warned and prepared, would we have survived? Thankfully we, (they) were prepared and took heed to the warning!

• You could hardly see for all the snow, Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go. • Rich kids - Dirt poor kids - didn't matter. You couldn't tell the difference. Uniform at school saw to that. • My mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread then chop the celery and onions on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning. By Stratton "Lefty" Schaeffer It was 1916 and the Kaiser's army was bogged down in trench warfare on the Western Front. World War I had become a war of attrition the German army could not win against the Allied coalition.
If the Germans could free up a million of their troops tied down fighting the Czar's Russian army on the Eastern Front, victory was still possible. They decided to employ a deadly secret weapon languishing for several years in Switzerland. Hopefully, this weapon would knock Russia out of the war, allowing the Germans to consolidate their army for one last all-out offense in the West. They had to win the war before America, with her overwhelming supply of men and material, was drawn into the European Calderon. By Canton Fitness Center/Dawn Pepper It is January and it seems like everyone is thinking about losing weight or getting in shape. Why is this a yearly ritual? Because every year people jump on the weight loss bandwagon and do this year’s “weight loss challenge”, join in on a weight loss group or buy into some expensive, commercial diet program, only to abandon it within a short period of time. Unfortunately, any success they may have had quickly evaporates.
By Gordon Matson The trouble with winter for one thing is the fact that there is not much actual news going on at an already quiet street. People get up, go to work (well, some do), and the rest of us sit around looking out the window and wait for something to happen that might be considered news.
By Elaine Gee Vi and Ron Slater went to Fassett on Tuesday to visit Larry and Linda Sullivan. They have been having health problems; so we must keep them in our prayers.
If you see Ruth Overrein on January 15th, wish her happy birthday or Pat Overrein on January 21 wish her happy birthday. From the 15th to the 21st they are the same age. On Saturday, Vi, Paige, Pati and Ron all went to Sharon Fleming's for a birthday party for Shelby Fleming who is three and her grandfather David Fleming. Also if you see Lester Watkins Jr. of Troy on January 17th wish him happy birthday. According to Joe Snedeker on TV 16, winter is half over. So hang in there. Spring is coming. Have a good week. By Richard & Joyce Pratt We sure have had some variety of weather this past week; in the 50s one day and then low teens to zero the rest of the week with freezing rain this morning.
Monday night last week was the tenant meeting. Some of the things to look forward to are pot luck dinners on the 24th, puzzle sale to be conducted on tax day; and Chinese auction at a later date, more details later. |
