Ernest Stephen “Steve” Probst

6/22/2018

During the early morning hours of Friday, June 22nd, 2018, Ernest Stephen Probst of Canton passed away quietly at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Known to family and friends as Steve, he was 73 years of age.  Born in Lock Haven on October 1st, 1944, he was the son of Woodrow and Ruth Probst.
Later, he lived in Johnstown  where he met his first wife,  the former Rosemary Hulslander.   In the mid 1960s  Steve and Rosemary moved to the Granville area where they raised their son and daughter.
Steve answered our country’s call during the Vietnam War and served with the U. S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Roosevelt.  He was employed for many years at Masonite in Towanda.  His wife, Rosemary, passed away in 1992 and two years later he married the former Ruth Sterling, with whom he shared the next 24 years.  Upon marrying Ruth he was blessed with five stepchildren.
Steve served the Canton community for many years  as part of the Fire Police.  He was also a member of Canton Post #303, American Legion and Canton Post #714 VFW.
In his free time Steve enjoyed drawing and painting, and was considered quite the accomplished artist.  He had a soft-spoken, yet outgoing and friendly demeanor, the kind of person who easily made friends with strangers.
Steve is survived by  wife, Ruth, at home; son Jeff (& Michelle) Probst, Richmond, VA.; daughter Penny Probst, Gillett;  five stepchildren; sister Jean Tressler, Grier, SC; numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Ruth Probst, and first wife Rosemary.
Visitation was held June 25th at the Canton Fire Department Social Building followed by a celebration of Steve’s life.
