George Baron

     George Baron, age 86, of Troy, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the Troy Guthrie Hospital.
    George was born April 4, 1931 in Nanticoke, PA son of the late Andrew and Susan (Bakalar) Baron. He was a 1950 graduate of Nanticoke School where he was active in the sports programs. During his high school years he earned varsity letters in football and wrestling.
    Following his high school graduation, George entered the military serving with the 967th Armored Detachment during the Korean Conflict. George enrolled at Mansfield University, where he was a member of the varsity football team in his freshman and sophomore years.  
    While enrolled at Mansfield George met Dolores A. Romania and they were married on June 25, 1955. George graduated Mansfield University in 1957 and was hired to teach and coach at Troy High School. While at Troy, George was varsity line coach for seven years and head wrestling coach for seventeen years. He is best known in the sport of wrestling, where his team compiled a career record of 170 wins, 51 losses and 3 ties. During the 1960’s he established Troy as one of the premier wrestling schools in the northern section of District 4. His teams advanced numerous wrestlers to post-season competition in sectionals, districts and regional tournaments. George served as Athletic Director for the Troy Area School District for twenty plus years. He retired in 1993. George was elected to the District 4 Hall of Fame in 1987.  He spent his life dedicated to teaching and coaching at the Troy High School.

Patricia Carey

    Patricia Carey,  82,  Roseville, PA, passed away on November 29, 2017 at Broad Acres.           Born on June 16, 1935 in Lawrenceville, PA, she was a daughter of Orlando and Leah (Strait) Simpson.
    Patricia was the wife of the late Kenneth Carey. She was employed at Swayze Box Manufacturing. Patricia enjoyed being a caregiver for her neighbor, baking, cooking and caring for her family. She was a member of the Roseville UM Church.
    Surviving are sons, Kenneth Carey, Canton, William (Jackie) Carey, Galeton, Alan (Sue) Carey, Lawrenceville;  daughters, Donna (Craig) Deitrich,  Covington; Connie (Curtis) Moore, Mainesburg; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren;  brothers, Dennis (Julie) Simpson of NY, Orlando “Lanny” Simpson of NY; sisters, Margaret “Margie” (Brian) McGee, Wellsboro, Martha (Elvin) Jackson,  Gillett, Bonnie (Gary) Brown Wellsboro.
     She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Fred Clark.
    Funeral was held, December 3, at the Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Mansfield.

Stephen A. Castle

    Stephen A. Castle, 63,  Canton, PA passed away at home while surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.
    Stephen Albert, “Steve”, was born in Sayre,  April 18, 1954.  He was one of eight children in the family of the late Arnold and Vera (Cole) Castle.
  Steve graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1972.
     On February 2, 1974, he married the former Eleanor “Ellie” Kunzman in Grover.  They were blessed with 43 wonderful years together and raised five children. Steve enjoyed his career as a truck driver and drove tractor trailer for several area companies.   He was very proud of his family and especially loved sharing family times and seeing his grandchildren.

    Darla “Dart” Rockwell, 62, Canton, PA passed away unexpectedly Monday, November 27, 2017.
    Darla Jean, “Dart” to family and friends, was born June 30, 1955, in Sayre, PA, a daughter of the late Maxwell Harry and Eleanor Marie (Davidson) Rockwell.          She was employed by Canton’s V.F.W. Post 714 and the Dollar General Store.  
    Dart was a member of Canton’s WOTM 981, V.F.W. 714 Auxiliary and Red Run in Roaring Branch.  She enjoyed doing many things in life, but special times were spent with her children and grandchildren.  
    She was the glue of her family; hardworking, honest and true to her own self.   She saw the good in everyone and was blessed with many special friends.  She also enjoyed her privacy, loved listening to all kinds of music, gardening, caring for her house plants and playing tickets.

Roscoe Bowling

   On the morning of Monday, November 27, 2017, well known Canton resident Roscoe Bowling Jr. passed away unexpectedly at Troy Hospital  from an aneurism. He was 68 years of age.  
    Born May 18, 1949 in Pine Knot, Ky,  he was the son of Roscoe Sr. and Edith (Coffey) Bowling.          
    Roscoe was raised in Pine Knot, and was a graduate of McCreary County High School.   He served our country as part of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.  
    He came to Canton in 1970 while working as a telephone line installer.  He met and married his wife of 46 years, Linda McIntosh Bowling, in 1971 and made Canton his home.
     Roscoe worked with the Auxiliary Police in Canton for several years but is best remembered as a beloved member of the old Landon’s Cedar Ledge team.
  He will always be remembered by family and friends for his quick wit, kind heart and friendly personality.

 Thomas E. Elvidge, 73, of East Smithfield, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2017 following a period of declining health.
 Tom was born March 18, 1944 in East Troy, son of the late James and Elma (Brown) Elvidge. He was a graduate of S.R.U. High School. Tom was a dedicated community member having served as the Fire Chief of the East Smithfield Fire Department as well as having served as part of the Tri-Township Ambulance Association. Tom believed ethic of working which resulted in him retiring a number of times including his retirement as a Paramedic from Guthrie as well as from Guthrie Med Supply Depot.

Gerald Saunders

Gerald Saunders, 86,  Canton, PA passed away unexpectedly with loved ones beside him on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Guthrie Troy Community Hospital.
    He was born in Grover, PA April 29, 1931, the last surviving child of the late Franklin and Lilly (Bastion) Saunders.  
    He married the former Joyce Marie Shadduck Dec. 21, 1949 in Grover.   They shared over 66 years of marriage and raised three children before her passing on Dec. 3, 2016.
     Gerald was always one to stay busy.  He was a handyman who could do about anything he put his mind to.  He was employed by the former Facet/Purolator Enterprises in Elmira Heights for over 33 years until retiring in 1983.  He then enjoyed driving for Endless Mountains Transportation Authority for 10 years.
     In earlier years, he worked at Canton’s Belmar, Swayze’s, Landon Cedar Ledge and drove for Canton Ambulance.   As a young man, Gerald was a member of the Grover Church of Christ before becoming a member of the Church of Christ, (Disciples of Christ) in Canton.  He was a life-member of Canton’s Innes Hose Company and served in several positions including Assistant Fire Chief.  He also was a dedicated, very active member in the Loyal Order of the Moose Canton Lodge 429 earning their highest honor, the Pilgrim Degree and serving in several offices as well as Governor.   But most important to Gerald were his children, grandkids and great grandchildren.  He also loved to visit with people and he told it as he saw it.  He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and was a former member of the Grover Hunting Camp.  Gerald and Joyce enjoyed camping, especially with special friends Bob and Dorothy Allen.

Gilbert Barrier

    Gilbert Barrier, 81,  Columbia Cross Roads, PA unexpectedly passed away November 25, 2017 at the Guthrie Troy Community Hospital.
    Gilbert Roland, “Gil” to family and friends, was born March 24, 1936 in Binghamton, NY, a son of the late Howard and Helen (Demer) Barrier.  
    Gil graduated from Vestal High School where he excelled in wrestling.  On June 7, 1958, he married the former Phylis Winans.  
    He  was a self-employed logger most of his life.  He also was a talented mechanic and a tinkerer, handyman type who could fix anything he set his mind to.  Though he usually kept to himself, his family always came first in his life.  Gil was a knowledgeable outdoorsman who loved the woods and nature.  He also will be remembered as an honest, hard-working man who would help anyone in need.  
    Surviving is his wife Phylis, a daughter Kimberly Quackenbush of Col-X-Rds;, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brother James D. Barrier and several nieces, nephews, cousins, many dear friends and neighbors.

Phyllis Maxine Ward

   Phyllis Maxine Ward, of Leona, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at the Troy Community Hospital on Tuesday, November 21, 2017; she was 85.
Phyllis will always be remembered for her loving nature, zest for life, and good humor.  She was a prolific baker and seamstress; renowned for gifting sweet treats and quilts to nearly everyone she met.  While raising a family she worked at the woven label plant, then for many years at Huslander's Garage, keeping the town of Troy supplied with cookies while she managed the office.  Phyllis enjoyed square dancing, playing softball and especially volleyball; she had the best serve around, playing pick up games with the family into her early 80s.  She was an active member of the Leona United Methodist Church, whose congregation she considered an extended family, and enjoyed spending her Thursdays with friends at the Gillett Senior Center.  We will miss her spunk, her sharp wit and most of all her hands, the fruits of which will continue providing warmth and comfort for many years to come.
    Phyllis was born in East Canton on July 5, 1932 to the late Marion (Wilcox) and Mylert Wright.  She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Richard Ward; and siblings Marjorie, Jennie, Philip, Marie, Wayne, Shirley, and Mark.

Mark L. Forster

   Mark L. Forster, 37, Canton, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
    Mark, or “Markie”, was born October 18, 1980 in Doylestown, PA, a son of Mark Forster of Canton and the late Darlene Eppler Forster.  
    He was a die-hard fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.  He enjoyed NASCAR and his driver was Jimmy Johnson.  Mark also followed professional wrestling.  He was an avid collector, especially lava lamps and anything “Eagle Football”.  He attended North Street Community Church in Canton.
  In addition to his father Mark, surviving is brother, John Forster, Philadelphia; grandmother, Beatrice Dillon, Albrightsville, PA; niece, Kayla Forster, Philadelphia;  several aunts, uncles and cousins.
 He was predeceased by his mother, two uncles and an aunt.
