Memorial Service ~ Jean E. Brenchley

   Jean E. Brenchley of State College passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Juniper Village in State College.
  A memorial service celebrating Jean’s life is planned for August 31, 11 A.M., at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County, 780 Waupelani Extension, State College.  In lieu of flowers, those persons wishing to support a cause valued and enjoyed by Jean are directed to the LeRoy Heritage Museum, 257 Mill St., Canton PA 17724.
​   Final arrangements are under the direction of Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton St., State College, PA.

Ruth Smith

   Ruth Smith, 80, of Blossburg, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 in Wellsboro, Pa. following a brief illness.  In keeping with Ruth’s wishes all services will be private. Pepper Funeral Home & Cremation Facility, in Blossburg is assisting the family with arrangements. William T. McNett

  William T. McNett, a retired Commander in the U.S. Navy and former Bradford County Commissioner who remained influential in Pennsylvania politics through his work with the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania, died suddenly on August 28. He was 89.
  A father of six, grandfather of 10 and great-grandfather of four, Mr. McNett was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Alice (nee Pittman) in March 2014.
  Mr. McNett graduated from Mansfield University (formerly Mansfield State Teacher’s College) in 1952 and joined the Navy immediately after graduation. During his 26 years of active duty, he served as a navigator on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown and operations officer in Danang, Vietnam, during the height of the Vietnam War. As a pilot, Mr. McNett flew seaplanes and multi-turbo prop planes.
In the mid-1970s, when Mr. McNett was stationed at the Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily, as the Executive Officer, his wife and three youngest children joined him, and the family traveled throughout Europe. Through his naval career, he held duty stations in Texas, Virginia, California, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Viet Nam, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Italy
  After retiring from the Navy, Mr. McNett returned to Pennsylvania and made a home in Canton, Pa., where he kept busy with a multitude of part-time jobs, hobbies, church and volunteer work. He was a substitute teacher at Troy High School and Canton High School. When his wife opened a fabric store, Mr. McNett repaired sewing machines for her customers.

Brian Lewis

    Brian Lewis went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 26, 2019, after a long illness.
    Brian was living with his beloved father, Conrad Lewis, and his sister, Sheila K. Lewis in Henrietta, N.Y.
Other family members include a daughter, Lynn L. Lewis and her son, brothers Robert (Margaret) Lewis and Vaughn (Jodi) Lewis, two paternal aunts, Anne Lawther and Judy Gatti, maternal aunts Shirley McKin and Emily (Dean) Shaffer and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
   Brian was predeceased by his mother, Anita Roberts Lewis, his grandparents, Emerson and Helen Lewis and Joseph and Lila Roberts and two aunts Dorothy Lewis Frey and Sue Lewis Shepard. He is also preseceased by two uncles, Lewis and Elwin Roberts.

Paul E. Bryington

    Paul E. “Paulie” Bryington, 72, of Gillett, PA passed away early Saturday morning at Elderwood in Waverly, NY, following a courageous battle with cancer.
    Paul Edward was one of seven children born in Blossburg to the late John “Jack” and Jessie (Kelley) Bryington. As a youngster, Paul grew up in the Gleason area and graduated from the Canton High School, class of 1964.  He then entered into the U.S. Army and obtained the rank of Sargent during the Vietnam Era.
   Following his honorable discharge in 1967, Paul was employed by Thatcher Glass in Elmira, NY.  Paul then began his employment as a Correction Officer for the State of New York for many years until retiring in 2009.
Paul was a member of the Gillett VFW Post 5655, the South Creek Lions Club and Fire Department. He was an avid bowler, golfer and in earlier years enjoyed pitching horse shoes. Somewhat quiet, Paul loved to visit and seemed to know just about everyone.  He was an easygoing gentleman with a kind heart.  A paragraph can not justify the things he enjoyed and did throughout life.  Those that truly knew him know the kind of man “Paulie” was and the amazing life he lived.
    Paul is survived by his daughter, Lisa (David) Westcott, and their children, Brian and Sarah all of Dryden, NY; his wife, Carolyn (Clark) Bryington and her children, John (Julia) Howell of Gillett and Michael (Kelly) Howell of VA; two sisters, Doris (Dale) Terry and Linda Johnson all of Elmira, NY; a brother, John (Gail) Bryington of Roaring Branch; a sister in law, Trish Bryington of Towanda; two brothers in law, Ben Thompson Jr. of Roaring Branch and Joe McIlwain of Killeen, TX; several  nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many dear friends.

Phillip C. Boinske Jr.

   Phillip C. Boinske Jr., of Sterling, Va., formerly of Blossburg, Pa., passed away at his mother’s home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, August 23, 2019, following a courageous battle with Cancer.
Phillip Charles was born September 18, 1975 in Wellsboro, Pa., to Phillip Boinske Sr. and Antoinette “Tonie” (Strong) Hall. He was a 1994 graduate of North Penn High School. While a NPHS, Phil excelled at High School basketball, baseball and football and was inducted in the Tioga County Student Athletes representing North Penn High School. After graduating he was accepted to Penn State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and most recently was employed by the Federal Highway Administration. Phil’s love of sports continued after his school years. He played on an adult softball league in Fairfax County, Va., and was later inducted into the Fairfax’s Softball Hall of Fame. Phil enjoyed car shows, snowboarding, playing softball, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, shooting guns, working on anything with a motor and possessed an extreme love of music. Phillip had a strong faith in the lord and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Blossburg.  He was also a proud member of Penn State’s Alumni association.  Most importantly, he always looked forward to time spent with his beloved daughter Hannah and cherished everything they did together.
Phillip was predeceased by his grandparents; Crescence and Charles Boinske, Theron and Viola McIlwain and Stanley Strong.

Gerald S. Hawthorne

   Gerald S. Hawthorne, 81, of Granville Summit, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
   A celebration of Jerry's life will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility in Canton; family will receive friends one-hour prior from noon to 1 p.m.  A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. EVA M. CHAAPEL

   During the early morning of Wednesday, August 15th, 2019, Eva May (Tillotson) Chaapel of Canton passed away peacefully at Bradford County Manor. She was 77 years of age. Born July 30th, 1942 in Union Township, Tioga County, Pa., she was the daughter of Oscar and Thelma (Gee) Tillotson. Eva enjoyed crocheting, word search puzzles and playing cards, especially Euchre. She was the kind of person who made friends easily and always enjoyed the company of family and friends. She was known for her good-natured “needling,” and even during her convalescence at the Manor she could bring smiles to faces and evoke laughter from those in her presence. Eva was a devoted mother of eight, and beloved grandmother and great-grandmother of many, who supported her young ones in their endeavors and took pride in their achievements.

Robert E. "Bob" McGovern

   Robert E. “Bob” McGovern, 92, well known and respected resident of Canton, Pa., passed away peacefully, Monday evening August 12, 2019, at the Guthrie Troy Community Hospital following a period of declining health.
  Robert Emmett was the youngest of seven children born to the late James and Lucy (Kennedy) McGovern. As a youngster, Bob grew up in his beloved Toytown area of North Towanda, swimming in the Susquehanna and being fascinated with the railroad that ran through the little community where his father worked.
   He attended the Towanda Schools and at the age of 17 joined the war effort just before graduating in 1945. Bob, a very humble man, was extremely proud to be a WWII Navy Veteran. He served on the USS Indiana Battleship and was part of the first ship of three to bombard homeland Japan.
​   After the war, Bob returned home to Towanda and later began employment with Penelec in 1959.  It was there he became a talented electrician and would spend over 30 years serving as a devoted lineman, until his retirement in 1990. In earlier years, Bob and his wife Ellen moved to Canton to make their home. He can be remembered as having his own Barber Shop in his home, which he operated nights after work as well as weekends. Bob was a very likable man and served as a bartender for the former Lantern Tavern in Canton for several years.

Louise Ameigh Pierce

   Louise Ameigh Pierce, age 99, went home to be with her beloved Lord and Savior and her husband Charles on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019. She was born Feb. 17, 1920 on Judson Hill, Coryland.
   Services will be held at the Columbia Cross Roads United Methodist Church on Aug. 24. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. with the memorial service to follow. Committal will be at Glenwood Cemetery following the memorial service with a lunch at the church afterwards.
   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Columbia Cross Roads United Methodist Church, P O Box 42, Columbia Cross Roads, PA 16914. Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory is assisting the family.
