Maurice “Buzz” A. Kendall

Maurice “Buzz” A. Kendall, 85 of Willow Valley Communities, died Saturday, July 25, 2020.  He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Phyllis J. Kendall (Jenkins). Buzz served in the US Army Security Agency for two years, upon returning home he went to work for Penelec, from where he retired in 1994 after 35 years.  Buzz was born in Troy, PA, and he and Phyllis raised their daughters in Canton, PA.  Upon retirement, he and Phyllis set out on the road in their motorhome and traveled the United States full time for 14 years, wintering in Arizona or Florida.  After a short 3 year stay in Rhode Island, they moved to the Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster, PA.


Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters Cindy Castle of Canton, PA and Laurie (David) Baud of Wakefield, RI, his grandchildren, Jessica Schneider, Jason Schneider, Heather (Andrew) Grace, all of Canton PA, Corinne Baud of Vail, CO and his great grandchildren Haley Turano, Orrin Grace and soon to be born great grandson Grace all of Canton PA.  He was predeceased by his parents Austin and Dorothy (Schucker) Kendall, sisters Marceil (Floyd) Haight, and Nancy (Richard) Boyle and son-in-law Joseph Castle.

Ralph W. Burgess

Ralph W. Burgess, 82, life-long resident of Roaring Branch, PA., passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. Ralph Wallace was born August 14, 1937 in Roaring Branch, a son of the late Andrew and Pearl (Skelly) Burgess. Ralph enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served our country during the Korean War.

A memorial service to celebrate Ralph’s life was held 11 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2020 at the Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Drive, Canton, PA 17724. Full military honors were accorded at the funeral home. Burial will be private in the Ogdensburg Cemetery. William H. “Bill” Kapichok Jr.

William H. “Bill” Kapichok Jr., 68, of Canton Township, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July, 21, 2020 at the Guthrie Troy Community Hospital. Bill was born in Norristown on February 26, 1952. The only child born to the late William Sr. and Idella (Quigg) Kapichok. He attended Spring-Ford Schools in Royersford and graduated with the class of 1970. After high School Bill studied Dairy Husbandry at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown. On August 18, 1974, Bill married the love of his life the former Margery Keppen in Royersford. They shared nearly 46 wonderful years together and raised three children. In 1979, Bill and Marge moved to Bradford County and established the family’s dairy farm near Windfall. Farming was something that Bill loved every aspect of.  He was also employed for 26 years by the Bradford County Corrections earning the rank of Sergeant.  While working at the Corrections Facility, he was known by many as “Farmer Bill”, a name that truly fit him.


Bill was an avid football and baseball player in his earlier high school years. He was a talented running back and proud to tell of his football team, the Spring-Ford Rams, winning the 1969 Ches-Mont football championship. Bill was also an enthusiastic sprint car fan and enjoyed attending racing events with is family, especially at the Selinsgrove Speedway watching the PA Posse.


Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law; Harold and Ruth Keppen.


Surviving Bill is his wife; Margery, children; Tara (David) Knecht and Clint (Andrea) Kapichok all of Canton and Guy (Katrina) Kapichok of Towanda, grandchildren; Kendall, Carter and Kimber Knecht and Kyle, Natalie, Hailey, Hannah and Harmony Kapichok, special cousin; Morris (Sandy) Quigg of Phoenixville,  and an aunt; Rose Ann Coakley of Pottstown.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 25, 2020 from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M at Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Drive, Canton, PA 17724.  The Funeral Service will be at 1 P.M. with the burial following in Windfall Cemetery. Gertrude Idella Morgan Robinson

On July 11, 2020, Gert has moved on to her next party, she lived her life to the fullest.  She resided in Montour Falls, NY at the Catherine Court and enjoyed all of her friends.  She passed away at the hospital after having health issues.  She was a 25 year old in a 92 year old body.  Born May 14, 1928 in Shunk, PA.  She was the daughter of Lester and Mary (Bohart) Morgan.  As a child she was in the Morgan Family Band which had performed at several locations including their own family dance hall.  She played many musical instruments and did not read music.  She had worked at many known businesses such as the Canton Diner, Eclipse Machining Plant, Gerber’s Grill, Morrisons and Trifoso’s Restaurant.  After moving to Florida in 1982, she had retired from the Ocala National Forest in 1998.


She was a charter member of the Montour Falls Moose Club and Eagles Club in Ocklawaha, FL.


She is survived by her son Lester Hilfiger (& Brenda) of Canton, PA, daughter Barbara Kraus (& Chipper) of Millport, NY, daughter Paulette Robinson (& Dave Stocum) of Pine Valley, NY, brother Ronald Morgan (& Linda (Fritz)) of Troy, PA, sister-in-law’s Barbie Morgan of Ocklawaha, FL, Myrtle Morgan of Gillett, PA and brother-in-law Philip Doud of Canton, PA.  She was the proud grandmother of her eight (8) grandchildren, twelve (12) great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband George R. Robinson as well as her siblings Harold, Harmon (Mutt), Geraldine (Rathbun), Morris, Marjorie (Doud) and Richard.

Gertrude’s wishes were to not have services but to have a celebration of her life which will be August 22 at the Montour Falls NY Moose Lodge from 2 – 5.

Alvin M. “Lefty” Shanley

Alvin M. “Lefty” Shanley, 95, Long-time resident of Troy, Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away on Friday July, 17, 2020 at the Bradford County Manor.

Alvin Matthew, Best known as “Lefty” was born near Ogdensburg, Tioga County Pennsylvania on July 25, 1924. He was a son of the late Matthew Joseph and Margaret Anna (Plutchak) Shanley.

Shortly following graduation from Canton High School in 1943, Lefty enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during WW II. He was a very proud Veteran and was honored to be an aircraft gunner during the invasion of Normandy.

On April 23, 1949, he married the former Barbara J. Thomas in the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Ralston. Together they shared nearly 70 years of loving marriage until Barb’s death on September, 29, 2018.

Lefty was employed as a Truck Driver by the former Swayze Box Company in Canton for 36 years, retiring in 1989. In earlier years, along with his wife Barbara, Lefty owned and operated Shanley’s General Store in Ogdensburg for several years.

He was a member of the St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Canton, The Buckhorn Hunting Club and was a life-time member of the Canton V.F.W. 714.

Lefty was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, horseshoes and gardening. He especially loved traveling, particularly the Shanley’s trip to Ireland in 1981.

Besides his parents and wife, Lefty was predeceased by; a brother, Lawrence (Wanda) Shanley and a sister, Frances Shanley and son-in-law; Robert Ives.

He is survived by his daughter; Denise Ives of Troy, grandchildren; Cara May of Troy, Robert Ives II of Oneonta, New York, Adam Ives of Port Orange, Florida, five great grandsons, brother; Robert (Betty) Shanley, nephews; Leo, Lyle and Larry (Kami) Shanley all of Ogdensburg, nieces; Sue Girdon of Williamsport and Barbara Waldeisen of State College.

Due to the recent pandemic, A private graveside service will be held at the St. Michael’s Cemetery in Canton. Military honors will be accorded in respect of Lefty’s service to our Country at the cemetery. 

His family suggests you consider a memorial in Mr. Shanley’s name to the St. Michael’s Catholic Church or the Bradford County Humane Society.

Evelyn Nicole Terry

On the morning of Sunday, July 19, 2020 Evelyn Nicole Terry of Canton passed away peacefully following a courageous battle with leukemia.


She was four years of age. Born November 27, 2015 in Sayre, Pa., she was the daughter of David Terry and Kathleen Parker. Evelyn was a bright, loving, precious child of God whose cheerful smile and sparkling eyes could light up the room. She enjoyed playing “pretend” and was always ready to play jokes on her Daddy and Grandpa. Evelyn loved her older sister and younger brother very dearly, and was known for being the world’s greatest hugger. A bright and shining light in everyone’s lives for such a precious time, and now she helps to light up the heavens.


Evelyn is survived by her parents, David Terry and Kathleen Parker, sister Maggie Terry, age 6 and brother Joseph Terry, age 2, grandfather David Parker, Nana Sharon Parker, grandmother Mona Parker, Uncle Steven and Aunt Brittney Parker, Aunt Lori Terry, Uncle Matt Lewis, Uncle Jeff Koval and Aunt Christy Rae.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday, July 23, at Morse & Kleese Funeral Home, 94 N. Center St., Canton, Pa. Mass of the Angels will be Friday, 11 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 106 N. Washington Street, Canton with the Rev. Joseph Kutch, celebrant. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Ronald E. Clementoni

Ronald E. Clementoni, 69, of Hughesville, died Thursday, April 2, 2020 at his home.


Born April 24, 1950 in Muncy, he was a son of the late Bernard E. and Patricia A. (Brink) Clementoni.  He and his wife, the former Sheila A. McIlwain, celebrated 32 years of marriage on January 23, 2020.


Ron was a dedicated family man who loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.  He was an avid Yankee, Giant, and Penn State fan who enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.  Ron was also a member of The Beacon:  A United Methodist Church, Hughesville, North Fork Hunting Club, Muncy Valley Moose, and the Hughesville Vol. Fire Dept. for over 35 years.


Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Leslie A. (Chris) Lordi of Milford; a son, Bart A. (Lisa) Clementoni of Moscow; two brothers, Rusty A. (Paulette) Clementoni of Williamsport and Rod L. (Pam) Clementoni of Hughesville; four grandchildren, Josie M. Lordi, A.J. Lordi, Ella M. Clementoni, and Anna Grace Clementoni; and his beloved dog, Mattie.


A memorial service will be held 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, at The Beacon:  A United Methodist Church, 148 S. Main St., Hughesville, with Pastor Doug Mellott officiating.  Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at the church.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hughesville Fire Dept., P.O. Box 53, Hughesville, PA 17737, the Beacon: A United Methodist Church, 148 S. Main St., Hughesville, PA 17737, or the Muncy Valley Moose, 875 Rt. 405 Hwy., Hughesville, PA 17737.

Thomas A. Dutchess

Thomas A. Dutchess, 77 years of age, passed away early Monday morning, June 15, 2020.
A quote from Tom: “My candle has burned at both ends.  Hopefully, the light has helped to guide all who have been around me.”

Tom touched many lives during his 77 years.  He was born in Washington, DC on June 3, 1943 the son of Raymond and Marjorie (Hardy) Dutchess.  Tom grew up in Canton, PA and graduated from Canton High School in 1961.  He continued his education and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education from Mansfield University in 1965.  Tom was the co-founder of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity, was a university student council member for 3 years and also VP and member-at-large of the organization.  Tom continued his advanced education and obtained his Masters in Administration at California State LA, Los Angeles, CA.

Working with young people of all sexes and ages, through teaching, administration and coaching were his greatest joys following being a husband, father and grandfather; nothing brought him more joy and satisfaction.  He loved coaching and playing baseball, golfing, camping and studying history.

Tom and Jean Merrill, his high school sweetheart, were married June 20, 1964.  Together they have celebrated over 55 years of marriage!

Tom is survived by his wife, Jean Dutchess; his daughters, Angela (Rod) Weeden and Annette Dutchess Hoover (John); his grandchildren, Cambria and Casen Weeden and step-grandsons, Casey and Evan Hoover; his brother, Ted (Patricia) Dutchess; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Merrill Ragusa (Sam), Martha Merrill Varvis (Mike) and Bob Merrill (Cheryl); along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours and a memorial service for Tom will be announced at a later date.  Interment will take place at the convenience of Tom’s family at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Canton, PA.  Contributions in memory of Thomas A. Edgar “Ed” M. Sheaffer

Edgar “Ed” M. Sheaffer, 79, of Ward Township, Tioga County, PA passed away early Friday morning on July 3, 2020 at his home while surrounded by family.


Edgar Maurice was born in New Holland, PA on August 13, 1940 to the late Maurice and Ruth (Weaver) Sheaffer.   He graduated from New Holland’s Garden Spot High School in 1959. On December 31, 1960 he married his true love in Paradise, PA, the former Beulah Diane Keneagy.


He later received training in wildfire behavior, Fire Warden State training and was appointed Fire Warden by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Most recently, Edgar served as a Ward Township Supervisor for many years.


Ed loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating.


He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beulah, his son; Craig (and Kimberly) Sheaffer of Mt. Joy, granddaughters; Samantha Sheaffer of Morris and Andrea (and Glenn Jr.) McQueen of Pequea, great grandchildren; Jocelyn and  Kroy McQueen, brother; Arden (and Nancy) Sheaffer of Homosassa FL; and a nephew; Danny (and Laurie) Sheaffer of St. Cloud, FL.


Maintaining to Edgar’s wishes, all services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Mr Sheaffer’s memory to the Guthrie Hospice, 421 Tomahawk Rd, Towanda, PA 18848.

Marvin Carl Engler

On the morning of Friday, June 19, 2020 Marvin Carl Engler of West Franklin passed away at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre following a protracted illness. He was 78 years of age.

Born May 11, 1942 in Rochester, NY, he was the son of Marvin C. Engler, Sr., and Helen (Mott) Engler. On August 8, 1967 he was married to the former Judy Ann Derhammer, and together they raised two sons. Marvin was a master electrician for thirty years, residing in Allentown, Pa.

He and Judy also owned and operated a laundromat and a hobby and crafts shop, where he was known as the “Train Doctor,” owing to his expertise at repairing model railroad equipment.

Following his retirement the Englers moved to West Franklin where he became well known for his outdoor electric train line which ran around his property, and was a hit with local children.

No matter in what community he lived Marvin was very active in the local Masonic lodge. Most recently he served as mentor to new members in Canton Lodge 415.
​
He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Judy, at home, sons Jeffery and Stephen Engler, brother Walter and sister Elaine as well as numerous cousins. In keeping with Marvin’s expressed wishes there will be no public services. (morseandkleesefuneralhome.com)
