MK Cafe offers fresh pick-up meals every Friday.

CANTON — MK Cafe & Catering in Canton is now offering a catered Friday lunch special every week.

“The menu changes weekly, no two weeks are the same. It could be pulled pork one week, soup & salad the following, and lasagna the week after that. So far, it has been a fun way to showcase various menu items on our large scale catering menu,” said owner Melyce Kenyon.

Each week’s menu will be released on social media by Monday evenings. MK will take pre-orders until that Thursday, for the Friday pick-up.

Melyce said prices will typically vary from $8-$12 per meal. This lunch special is 100% pre-order only, and at this point in time, pickup only. With enough interest, they will consider a delivery option as well.

“It’s super easy to order, just shoot me an email, text or Facebook message and I’ll send you back a confirmation.”
Due to COVID restrictions and winter coming, the Kenyons decided this would be a good way to utilize their cafe and still follow state guidelines.

Civic Club announces Halloween plans

10/28/2020

Picture
The theme for the 81st Annual 2020 Canton Civic Club Halloween Parade is “There is No Theme” and is being held Saturday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m.

While the parade is going to happen, please understand that some changes must be made in order to follow regulations put in place with regard to Covid-19.  We are encouraging mask wearing and discouraging congregating in groups.  Participants in the parade cannot exceed 250.  We are asking that there be no throwing of candy from the floats/cars as this would encourage close interaction.

The parade route will not be on PennDOT roads and will instead be along Borough residential streets.  We are considering expanding the route, again to encourage social distancing, but it would be helpful if we could gauge the interest on participation to help us finalize the route.  We recommend spectators do not congregate on corners and instead spread out across sidewalks or on their own front porches/lawns along the parade route.  There will be no music in the Main Street Park prior to and after the parade nor will there be an MC.

Floats will be judged at 4:30 p.m.; judging will take place along East Union Street facing west beginning at the intersection of North Minnequa Avenue and East Union Street.  Please line up with first float at that intersection and additional floats behind it.  Please have floats available at 4 p.m. to begin lining up for judging.  There will be a novelty category to include items that are not floats (ie:  4-wheelers, golf carts, etc.)  Antique cars are welcome, but will not be judged unless decorated.

Board learns about Learning Pathways survey to parents

10/28/2020

by Matt Jennings
Correspondent

TROY — The Troy School Board held its meeting on Oct. 20.

They started out with a presentation by Mrs. Angela Keating on the results of a Learning Pathways Survey sent out to district students.

The survey garnered 151 responses, 61 from parents and the rest from students grade 8-11. The first question regarded potential languages respondents would like to see taught at Troy. Of the choices available, French garnered the most votes, with German and Chinese following. Troy currently only teaches Spanish as a second language.
Survey takers were also asked to pick a “career cluster.”

Career clusters represent different learning pathways students could take at Troy and corresponded to different classes and programs students can try to better prepare themselves for professional life.

Respondents were asked what programs they felt would best prepare them for work in Bradford County and Troy.
Of the many choices ranging from Health Science to Art to Marketing, the top three choices were STEM, Agriculture, Business Administration. The results were encouraging as Troy has a strong Agricultural program and STEM
programs currently.

The board voted to approve a contract with Alparon Park to host its football games there. The contract would be for $1,000 per game hosted with a minimum of $5,000 paid. Also included is a provision that for $300 a week the district may use the field for practice of any sport be it football, cheerleading, or any other outdoor sport.

CANTON — The first item on the agenda of the Police Committee was a question from councilman Schrader regarding body camera and car camera use in the department. The police committee meeting took place on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the borough council room of the borough building.

Chief Doug Seeley stated that the department has no functioning body cameras or cameras in cars and it would cost an estimated $5,000 per car to install them.

It was mentioned that Troy PD was currently looking into cameras and Canton may ask them to see what they can come up with.

Chief Seeley also asked that the 2019 vehicle remain unmarked in order to better surveil without being instantly recognized.

UNION TOWNSHIP — Nestled on a hill in Union Township, Tioga County, lies Windy Hill Fowl, a business not like many around the area.

It’s been three years since Owners Amanda and Travis Pepper started a job for the Pennsylvania  Game Commission in Cambridge Springs to tear down a 130-acre pheasant farm. It was there, after eight weeks of hard work, they decided their future.

“My husband, myself, and our four kiddos lived in a camper for eight weeks and worked, and I mean worked, from sun up to sundown. Lots of sweat, tears, but some great times, conversations, and great satisfaction once it was completed,” said Amanda Pepper. “People (were) stopping in disbelief of the progress that our family was making. Wondering where all of his help was, not believing it was just himself, his wife, and four kids.”

After they finished cleaning up the pheasant farm, they salvaged some of the materials and gave the “birding” business a try.

“I’ve always wanted to use some of our acreage at home,” said Amanda, whose home sits just outside of Ogdensburg, along Route 414. The preserve spans 130 acres.

Victory Church buys Skateland

10/21/2020

TROY — Skateland in Troy has been a staple to the community for many years. Recently, Victory Church bought the business from Charlie Earle and decided to keep it going.

“In December of 2019 I heard it was for sale. It was a Friday night and we were craving one of Charlie Earle’s famous chicken wing pizzas,” said Josh Payne, the Lead Pastor of Victory Church.

“When I went to pick it up, I mentioned Skateland being for sale to Charlie. It was really important to him that whoever would be purchasing it could move it forward so the tradition continued. The rest is history.”

Payne says one of the most common misconceptions is that it will no longer be a skating rink, but another Victory church, which he says is not true. Victory plans to continue to serve the public as a skating rink., now named Sk8Zone.
From day one, Victory Church has set out to be a blessing to the community.
