Norma Jean was born August 25, 1919 at the family home in Granville Township near Cowley. She was one of six children of the late Joseph W. Sr. and Maude (Shoemaker) Foust. After graduating from Troy High School in 1936, Norma worked for a time as a secretary in Troy for the Boy Scouts Troop No. 1, which was the first established Boy Scout group in the country. On June 24, 1939, she married Lial J. Shedden, they soon purchased a farm near Troy. They shared nearly 48 years together and were blessed with four children before Lial’s passing on June 1, 1987.
Norma was a great example of a dairy farmer’s soulmate. A beloved wife, devoted mother, grandmother and an exceptional homemaker, she often would help with farm work and there were times which could be the entire day. Norma was a talented cook and well-known for her white sugar cookies which she shared with many. She was hard working and especially enjoyed being outdoors; she grew large vegetable gardens, picked fruit and wild berries to can for the winter and loved tending to her flowers.
She is survived by her children; Dale (Mertie) Shedden and Leo (Sandra) Shedden all of Troy, Neil Shedden (Connie Avery), Granville Summit and Claire Case, Troy; 15 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren; siblings; Marie Seeley, Troy and Joey (Ellen) Foust, Granville Summit, sister-in-law and brother-in-law; Marie Foust and Leon Shedden both of Granville Summit, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband Lial, she was predeceased by three siblings; Blanche Mott, Betty Slingerland and Ted Foust.
Her family invites friends to call 10 – 12 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr. in Canton. Rev. Josh Davinsizer will officiate the funeral service at noon. Burial will follow in Windfall Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Mrs. Shedden’s memory to the Windfall United Methodist Church, c/o 1204 Redington Ave. Troy, PA 16947.
