Linda Lee (Cathers) Mackie

7/16/2017

Linda Lee Cathers Mackie, 71, of North Towanda, Pa., passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 16, 2017 with her family by her side, after a three year battle with cancer.
Linda was born in East Stroudsburg, Pa. on Feb. 20, 1946, daughter of the late W. Edgar Cathers Jr. and Helen G. Replogle Cathers.
She graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, PA, with the class of 1964. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Millersville University in 1968.
On June 8, 1968, Linda married Alan R. Mackie at the Bala Cynwyd United Methodist Church where her father was the pastor. The couple then moved to Towanda to make their home.
Linda taught school for the Athens School District for a year and then taught in the Towanda Middle School for several years until she resigned to raise her two boys, becoming active in the Towanda Parent-Teachers Group. She later returned to become a long term substitute for over a decade in the Towanda Area School District. The last few years of her teaching career were at the Son-Shine Christian School in Canton, Pa., until her retirement in 2000.
Linda was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Towanda where she served many years in several offices including Christian Education Chairperson, Administrative Board Secretary, Church Historian, 150th Church Anniversary Chairperson, and choir member. She served as a member of the North Towanda Planning Commission, the Towanda Public Library Board of Trustees and was a member of the Towanda Country Club.
Linda enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren, playing games and puzzles, reading, and designing greeting cards for friends and family. She loved to travel with her husband and family, particularly on golf vacations, where she and Alan played many different courses over the years with Linda faithfully documenting their many scorecards.
Her surviving family includes her husband of 49 years, Alan; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas E. and Donna M. Mackie, Amesbury, MA, Scott A. and Jennifer K. Mackie, Sutton, MA; grandchildren, Charles E. Mackie and Sarah B. Mackie; her sisters, Patricia A. Fetterolf,  Mechanicsburg, PA, Sheila Cathers of England; as well as an aunt, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service was held July 20, 2017 at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda, with Pastor Rachel Stahle officiating.
Interment will be private in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda.
The family suggests that contributions may be directed to the Towanda Public Library, 104 Main St., Towanda, PA 18848, in Linda's memory. Memories and condolences may be expressed by visiting www.bowenfuneralhome
