Jake, as he was known to by everyone, was born May 31, 1928 in Granville Summit, Pa. to the late Miles and Madeline (Bunyan) Spencer. He attended Towanda High School and upon leaving school, at an early age, entered in the U.S. Navy for six years proudly serving during WWII on a refueling ship. Following his honorable discharge, Jake had many vocations throughout his life time. He was a local truck driver and dairy farmer in his earlier years, operated a local lime spreading business and sold race horses throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Chicago and Kentucky. He was a distinguished auctioneer for both Spencer Auctions locally and Martin Auctioneers in New Holland, Pa., where he auctioned household and farm items as well as real estate. Jake was a former president of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association, a member of the Towanda VFW, Kellogg Mt. Rod and Gun Club, Odd Fellows and the “Old Bastards Club” both of Towanda. He once ran for Bradford County Commissioner with the campaign slogan " Make no mistake vote for Jake” and nearly won. Jake had a gift for being a story teller, mostly always true. When his health permitted, he could often be found at the local restaurant or coffee shops, knowing everyone there. Jake will always hold a very special place in many hearts. He was a kind, caring man and will be missed greatly by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his children; April (Gregory) Davis of Emmaus, Kenny Spencer of Franklindale, Roger (Dawn) Spencer of New Holland, Timothy Spencer of Franklindale, six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; his former wife of over 30 years; Jean Spencer of Franklindale, a brother; Joe (Janice) Spencer of Rochester, N.Y., sisters-in-laws; Evie Spencer of Honeybrook, Lynn Spencer of Brockport, N.Y., and Donna Spencer of Hilton, N.Y., several nieces, nephew, cousins and numerous close friends.
