Bertha Spencer, 90, Canton, passed away at home while surrounded by loved ones on Monday morning, May 21, 2018. Bertha Mae, “Bert” was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA November 23, 1927, a daughter of the late Arthur Nelson and Ethyl (Baker) Finogle. She married Donald Dean Spencer on August 20, 1947 in Maple Summit, PA. Don and Bert shared nearly 62 years of marriage and raised four children before his passing on May 12, 2009. Bert enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles and gardening. She also loved country music. She and Don took several trips to see country artists perform and she especially enjoyed the music of Bob and Dean McNett. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Grover. Surviving are her children; Donita (Harold) Sargeant of York, PA, Mary Lou Spencer (Bill DeGraw) of Sayre, Marcia (Ken, Sr.) Willow and William Donald “Bill” Spencer all of Canton, five grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, two siblings; George Finogle of Dushore and Orin (Florence) Finogle of Canton, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Charles Matthew “Matt” Charles Matthew Tappan, 46, passed away, Monday, May 21, 2018 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He was born on Nov. 23, 1971 in Sayre, PA, the son of Lee and Charlotte (Shaffer) Tappan. Matt was a loving husband and father, whose life revolved around his family. Spending time with them was his highest priority, he loved them fiercely and was loved the same way in return. He was a 1991 graduate of Waverly High School. Following graduation, he attended Corning Community College, where he obtained his Associates Degree. Furthering his education, he went to Mansfield Police Academy, where he received an award as Sharp Shooter of his class. Matt was employed with PennDot in Towanda as a Truck Driver. He also served as a Pennsylvania State Constable and worked in the past for the police departments in Renovo and Athens Borough. Softly in the morning, you heard a gentle call, you took the hand God offered you and quietly left us all…..Theodore N. ed, as he was affectionately known by his family and friends was born on February 18, 1933 in Wilmot, Pa one of eleven children to David and Bertha (Livingston) Matthews. He proudly served his county with the US Army. On August 13, 1954 he married Donna M. May, together they shared sixty years of marriage until her passing on March 16, 2015. Ted was a man of many talents and throughout his life had various job positions to include a delivery-salesman with John T. Wenck for thirteen years. Many will remember him as custodian at Northeast Bradford others will remember him as a bartender at Sammy’s and Corie’s. On the evening of Thursday, May 17th, 2018, former LeRoy resident, Frederick R. Chaapel, passed away quietly at Bradford County Manor following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 81 years of age.
Born in LeRoy Township on June 16th, 1936, he was the son of Burr and Helen (Carter) Chaapel. Throughout his life Fred worked at many jobs, the most prominent one being that of a sawyer for L.L. Baumunk Lumber Co. in Shunk. Fred was a quiet, somewhat retiring kind and gentle soul who never had a lot to say, but to those who knew him closely he was a true and loyal friend. He endeared himself especially to the staff at Bradford County Manor during the past few years. Connie J. (Hall) Allen, 73, of Wellsburg, NY and formerly of Troy, passed away on Friday, May 11, 2018 at ELCOR in Horseheads, NY. Connie was born on May 7, 1945 in Troy, daughter of the late Robert N. and Mabel (Abbey) Hall. She was a Troy High School graduate, after did factory work at LRC, ran a snack truck, and later worked as a bartender at Settlement. Connie enjoyed reading, collected antiques and Native American Art, loved her cats and dogs, and in her years loved riding horses.
AnnaMary (VanHorn) Hulslander, 94, East Smithfield, PA passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
She was the loving wife of the late Alfred W. Hulslander who passed away on September 7, 1986. The couple married August 30, 1945 and had 41 happy years together. AnnaMary was born on December 1, 1923 in Granville, daughter of the late Luther and Leota (Baxter) VanHorn. She was a graduate of Mansfield Teacher’s College (Mansfield University) and was a third grade teacher at the Gladys Burnham Elementary School in Ridgebury, PA from 1966 until her retirement in 2002. AnnaMary was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Bradford County, was a member of the East Smithfield United Methodist Church where she was a Bible School and Sunday School teacher, and attended East Smithfield Federated Church. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and crocheting in her spare time, but enjoyed spending time with her family and friends most. Julius E. Putnam, 85, Sayre, formerly of Troy, PA passed away with his beloved wife, Barbara and his step-son, Jim, by his side on Saturday, May 05, 2018 at his home following an extended illness.
He was born on January 5, 1933 in Canton, PA, the son of the late William and Gertrude Wood Putnam. Julius was a graduate of Troy High School. While in school, he was a member of the Troy Drum and Bugle Corps. He was employed with Hall Motor Company Dealership and Paper Magic at one time. Most of his life he was a farmer in the Troy area for various family owned farms. Julius was a man who loved being outdoors, enjoying nature and that is why farming was the job he enjoyed most. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed their coffee hour at the home once a week where everyone would sit around drinking coffee and solving the problems of the world. Julius enjoyed traveling, puzzle books, and going to the casinos. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Troy. He is predeceased by his daughter, Vicki Dudwitt, brother, Dale Putnam, brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Larene Putnam, sister-in-law, Joan Cole, and brothers-in-law, Clarence Baxter and John VanNoy. Jordan David Johnston, 32, Columbia Cross Roads, at peace after years of battling the disease of addiction on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Harrisburg, PA. He was born on March 3, 1986 in Sayre, the son of David E. and Judy G. (Chamberlain) Johnston. Jordan was a graduate of Troy High and worked as a roofer in Harrisburg. He loved his family and many special friends and was especially great with kids. A true free spirit forever young at heart. He loved hiking, boating, knee boarding, music, making hemp jewelry & taking ANYTHING white and tye-dying it, which he then vended at many local & state wide festivals. Jordan is survived by his parents; a maternal grandmother, Carroll Passeri of Gillett,; a paternal grandmother, Frances Chopak of Troy; several aunts, uncles and cousins. |
