She was a member of the Canton Moose Lodge and an active member in the Women’s Auxiliary at the Canton American Legion where she started the cancer care packages for local residents battling cancer. Kim was also an active member of the Grover Church of Christ. Her faith deepened while going through personal battles. She loved participating in their Choirs and served others through various supportive roles.
Kimberly Ann (Palmer) Brown, 45, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday morning, Apr. 16, 2019 following a courageous three-year battle with breast cancer that had spread to her lungs and brain. She was born Nov. 3, 1973 in Towanda, Pa., a daughter of Robert “Bob” Eugene Palmer and Kathlene Ann (Kilmer) Best. Kim loved the Canton area and resided there her entire life.

Thomas Hurlburt, 58, of Canton, Pa., passed away peacefully on Apr. 16, 2019 at home surrounded by his loved ones. Thomas Michael was born Feb. 24, 1961 in Blossburg, Pa. to James and Sandra (Burgess) Hurlburt.
In his early years, he enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He attended many car shows with his 1967 ford galaxy that won numerous trophies. Tom was a lifelong truck driver until his health no longer permitted him to continue. He was a man of faith and was baptized Methodist. Thomas was predeceased by his grandparents; Leon and Alta Burgess and Robert Hurlburt. On the afternoon of Sunday, Apr. 14, 2019 Destiny Suzanne Scott of Troy passed away quietly following a courageous battle with Huntingdon's Disease. She was 32 years of age, and is survived by her mother, Jill Ayres, stepfather Stephen Ayres, sisters Melinda Scott, Casey Hall and niece Myra Hall, of Troy, sister Kristen Knudsen of Green's Landing, Godparents Kathy and Harry Johnson, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins step-siblings, Soul Sister Mindy Chilson and her daughter Emilee Chilson. Dr. John A. “Jack” Rushin, 86, well-known Canton, PA resident passed away Sunday, Apr. 14, 2019 at Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, FL.
John Andrew, “Jack” to family and friends, was born June 19, 1932 in Alden, Pa. (Luzerne County), a son of the late Andrew and Sophie (Olshefski) Rushin. In 1950, he graduated from Newport High School before earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956. He then served in the U.S. Air Force for three years in Florida. On Dec. 17, 1956 Jack married the former Albertha Kemerite. They were blessed with 62 years together and raised two children. Dr. Rushin first started his practice in Canton in 1960. He later worked with the Dentistry Department of the Guthrie Clinic from 1967 – 1968 before re-establishing his Canton practice in 1969. In 1986, Dr. Rushin opened a new dental office located at 11 E. Main St. Canton where he remained until retirement. Jack knew the Lord in his heart and was a faithful member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a past president and member of the Canton Area School Board, Canton Lion’s Club, the South Mountain Hunting Club and was a former high school football referee. LaRue “Rue” Evans, of Canton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on Saturday, Apr. 13, 2019.
LaRue Raymond was born Sept. 3, 1963 to the late Paul Evans Sr. and Carol Wilson Evans in Blossburg, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating from Canton High School in 1981 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp where he served as a heavy equipment operator. LaRue was a solids control operator and heavy machine operator in the oil field business until his health no longer permitted him to continue. On June 19, 2015 he married Donna Marie Drake in Ogdensburg, Pennsylvania. Rue was a very loving and devoted husband. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. LaRue also liked Nascar’s Mark Martin and the Florida Gators College Teams. M. Lawrence “Larry” Case, 78, of Old State Road in Troy, Pa., passed away on Thursday, Apr. 11, 2019 at the Bradford County Manor. He was the loving husband of the late Virginia “Ginny” (Lyon) Case who passed away Jan. 12, 2010. The couple married May 6, 1962 and had 47 happy years together.
Larry was born on Apr. 15, 1940 in Canton, Pa. son of the late Lawrence A. and Blanche (Swingle) Case. His early life was spent on the farm in Beech Flats until moving to the farm in Troy at the age of 16. Larry was a graduate of Troy Senior High School, class of 1958. Larry’s passion was farming and he ran the family dairy farm until his retirement in 2009. He was able to keep machinery on the farm working with his excellent mechanical abilities and expert welding. His memberships includes being a lifelong member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association (PFA) which is now the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and a member of and past chairman of the Troy Agway committee. He was also a member and past president of the Troy School Board in the 1980’s. Larry was a member of the Austinville Union Church, sang in the church choir, and was a member of the Bradford County Gideons. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed bowling in the 2 in 1 league at Terrace Lanes. Francesca Victoria (Marucci) Homet, 91, of Troy, Pa. went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Apr. 11, 2019 from the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. Fran was born Jan. 7, 1928, in Jessup, Pa. to Desolena and Attilio Marcucci. The second child of five. She lived on a farm in Spring Hill. She graduated from Wyalusing High School, and then earned her teaching degree at Mansfield College. While at Mansfield she belonged to Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Art Club, and sang in the Women’s Choir.
Fran met and married James Tyler Homet, of Allentown. She taught Elementary School for over 30 years, mostly as a second grade teacher at W.R. Croman Elementary in Troy, Pa. Fran was an active citizen of Troy for most of her life. She served on many of the church committees at the First Presbyterian Church in Troy and served as a deacon of the Church for many years. She also served on several ladies committees and was a member of several clubs and auxiliary organizations. They include the Troy Women’s Association, life membership in PASR and NEA, and the Thursday Study Club. Fran was named Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Chapter Volunteer of the Year for the Bradford/Sullivan County area in 2011. Her other volunteerism included: the Troy Food Bank, the Farm Museum and Village where she was a charter member in 1991 and helped with giving tours, worked in the gift shop , and tended the flower gardens, and served her community driving the elderly to appointments and cooking a meal for anyone in need. Robert E. Schucker, age 92, of Sylvania, Pa., passed away on Monday, Apr. 8, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Sept. 12, 1926 in Troy, Pa., a son of Mark and Mary (Neubauer) Schucker. Robert was the husband of the late Ina (Simcoe) Schucker who died in 2012.
He is survived by a daughter, Tricia (Lindsay Wickham) Schucker of Troy, Pa.; two grandchildren, Liz and Ian Schumacher; Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, James, Charlie, Mark; two sisters, Miriam Turner, Shirley Brian. Tom was born and raised in Canton, Pa., and graduated from Canton High School and the Case Institute of Technology with a BS in Engineering in 1966. Tom moved west with his wife Karen and son Robert in 1968 to become employee number 38 of Intel Corporation, where he would spend the next 30 years – in California, Israel and Arizona – as a participant in the remarkable technical and manufacturing innovations that propelled the microprocessor industry. His tenure at Intel began as a “computer chip” designer, later saw him establish a successful microprocessor design center in Haifa, Israel, a cherished highlight of his career, and ended as General Manager of Intel’s Embedded Microprocessor business and its Arizona site committee. Tom believed deeply in sharing the thrills and benefits of science and technology as widely as possible, a commitment he pursued as a Lifetime Trustee and former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Arizona Science Center, helping effect its transition from storefront pilot in downtown Phoenix to today’s leadership position in STEM exhibits and education. He was also a founding member of the Arizona Science Lab where he developed curriculum and taught hands-on science and engineering workshops to hundreds of elementary and middle school children. In his off hours, he loved crossword puzzles and the beautiful sports cars of his youth. An engineer at heart, he never saw a problem that couldn’t be solved, or at least better understood, by plotting it on graph paper.
Jesse T. Moritz, 61, of Canton (LeRoy Township, Pa.), formerly of Warminster, Pa., passed away unexpectedly at home Saturday afternoon, Apr. 6, 2019.
Jesse Taylor was born on May 9, 1957 in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of Edward Moritz and the late Louise (Lee) Moritz. Louise preceded him in death on Apr. 26, 2012. Following high school graduation, Jesse entered the U.S. Army and was as a MP/dog handler serving two years in Germany until his honorable discharge. Most recently he was employed for several years by Ward Foundry in Blossburg, Pa. Jesse loved the outdoors and fishing, especially ice fishing. He was a member of Canton’s Sons of the American Legion No. 0303 and a Life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 714 also in Canton. |
