By Richard & Joyce Pratt | The Troy Fair is off to a nice hot start with hot weather forecast for most of this week. But what can we say? Troy Fair is noted for hot weather and rain. Several from Hillcrest attended the horse show, Sunday and opening ceremony and Troy Fair Queen Pageant. Congratulations to Fair Queen Tricia Hojnowski. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Jackie McMann who passed away. She was a longtime resident of Hillcrest. Also to the Saunders family in the loss of Hazel Saunders, another longtime resident and close neighbor when we were at McCallum Manor. Tenants are reminded to sign up for the annual Hillcrest Picnic, Aug. 20th, put on by the Housing Authority with everything furnished. Sign up sheet is on the bulletin board. | Many will be attending the Troy Fair this week, which reminds me of the many years while growing up of getting a 4-H animal trimmed and ready to show and the many days at the fairground keeping them clean and ready to show. In later years, taking the grandchildren to the fair for the day. The weather sure is making the flowers grow. We have some of the tallest glads I ever saw. A neighbor measured one at 6'4" (top photo). The lilies (second photo) are beginning to look beautiful and in full bloom. As well as many other flowers: Petunias are out doing themselves. Pat and Ray Buck, cousins from Sunfish Pond surprised us with a short visit this morning as we were preparing to write this column. |
By Elaine Gee Hi everyone. Judy and I were over to Wal-Mart, recently.
My condolences go out to Mike Chopak family. Vernon Perry IV and Vernon III and Terri called on me, Wednesday night. Edie and Aryone called on me, Thursday morning. Maria, little Jay and Aleeshial Cummings called on Friday morning. It seems good to have them all stop in. Sunday, Judy and I went to K-Mart. Rev. Kenneth Marple, M.A. A One-Winged Bird Can’t Fly
What I like about America is that it has two wings. Whenever it gets lopsided, or begins to fly in circles, the people always seem to know that it’s time to give a little more power to the other wing. That done, the Eagle levels herself and flies a little straighter. That is, until the other wing gets out of control! Every healthy bird has both a right and a left wing. Things get precarious when the right wing wants to cut off the left wing, or when the left wing wants to cut off the right. Yes, history tells us that we have prospered and flown well because we are a nation with two wings. We have business and we have labor unions. We have merchants and we have consumer advocates. We have industry and we have environmentalists. By Stratton "Lefty" Schaeffer Third Party Candidates Who Impacted The Election of a President
American history is filled with examples of third party candidates who had little or no impact on the election of past presidents. Most were individuals representing a parochial issue of the day. Their candidacy represented a protest vote rather than a serious effort to win the election on a national level. However, in the past century the outcome of three presidential elections were seriously impacted or overturned by third party candidates. Based on the narcissistic personality of at least one GOP hopeful, the 2016 election could split the conservative vote and allow old, “ What difference does it make?” to become the new White House occupant. Let's review three case histories in the past 100 years before we discuss next year's election: By Lorelei Colton I have good news to report regarding our grange booth exhibit entry at the Troy Fair. We (Minnequa) got a 1st place blue ribbon! As always, all 7 entries were great and I’m sure the judges’ scores were very close and tight. Ours was titled “CORN – FOOD, FUEL AND FUNDAMENTALS” and we displayed several items that were included in those categories that were actually made from corn. I used the help of the Internet as well as my husband Ron and some friends to obtain information, plus Ron’s muscle was instrumental in the actual booth set-up. I’ll be taking a couple of pecan pies to the fair Friday to be sold to benefit Pomona Grange.
By Esther Butcher I don't have anything of news, it's too quiet around this past week. Enjoy the sunny and HOT weather. I guess we are all glad it quit raining for a few days.
Our condolences to Dale Saunders and his family on the passing of his mother Hazel.
I guess the biggest Sister Street news is our neighbor Kenny has been seen driving a brand new car (and it's red) around. Imagine my surprise upon returning from town Friday to find my wife hand-washing the car and then waxing it also. I suppose she was getting some frustrations or aggressions worked out. She did that last week with some hedges and now we have hardly any left. I'm lucky she usually does these things when I am not nearby. Another neighbor, the Mattocks have been doing some remodeling on their front porch and it looks very nice. After missing a couple of breakfasts at the church due to commitments, and as daughter Beth says, "our social calendar," we made it last Saturday and were joined by the Hojnowski family, all three of them. This is rare as I don't know how they ever find time to eat let alone all at the same time. In the few minutes we spent together we learned Tricia was on her way to Troy and fair duties and Tom decided to stop in for breakfast as he was waiting for hay to dry. Tracy referred to various pieces of farm equipment as lawn ornaments. At least they are changed often. By Kathie Lepper Rather short on news items here on "The Ridge" this morning. I did hear that the Daily Review hadn't been delivered, probably because of the flash floods around the area on Sunday.
Jeannette May reported that she has a new great-great grandniece, born in Elmira, NY last week. Jeannette also said that her friend Sheila Willson from Binghamton, NY had called and said she wasn't getting any squash on her vines. Her ninety-year old neighbor told her to use an artist brush to paint each blossom to pollinate them as there aren't enough bees to do the job. I guess Sheila took her advice so we'll see if it works. As I was out and about earlier looking for news, I met Arlene Quail as she was leaving for an appointment in Williamsport. Arlene said that she had attended the Quail Family reunion over the week at the Forksville Fairground. Dear Readers,
At all our Masses last weekend we read about the multiplication of the loaves and fish. Jesus fed 5000 men and all the accompanying women and children with 5 barley loaves and 2 fish. I don’t think those fish were whales…it was a true miracle. This weekend we will be reading the passage in the Gospel of John where Jesus identifies Himself as the Bread of Life. He is the real Bread which Moses’s manna from heaven and the five barley loaves are but a symbol, a type, a shadow. Read John 6 when you have time. It is a true revelation of yet a more substantial true miracle. By Lois Ribovich Ralston lost another resident last week, my cousin and friend Charlie Carnes. I know he is in a better place, but he will be missed. He is survived by his wife Elsie and sons and daughters. Rest in peace Cheeta. Sympathy to the family.
Beat the Heat With an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social
"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!" How many times did you sing that when you were younger? I know I did. As a kid, one of my favorite treats was an ice cream sundae. As an adult, it still is! Why not invited some family and friends over this weekend and t create a sundae bar. Here's the scoop on a few of my favorite toppings. Hot fudge is a classic. While recipes have the same foundation, there are many variations on how to make it. By William Bower
By John Shaffer A series of videos may have brought the issue of abortion front and center into the Presidential race. Operatives from the Center for Medical Progress posed as executives of a medical tissue company and taped Planned Parenthood officials (without their knowledge). In the first video, the official describes how Planned Parenthood sells fetal tissue and organs. In the second video a Planned Parenthood official tells the "executives" that Planned Parenthood is willing to "violate protocol" to obtain fetal tissue and organs for sale; the third video another official discussed the sale of fetal tissue and organs on a "per-item" basis. In all three videos, the Planned Parenthood officials are laughing, making wisecracks and generally failing to treat the aborted babies with any respect, but that should not come as a surprise.
Canton Fitness Center Secret Weapons For Health
Protein, fiber and water; what is the common factor? Actually, these will – especially when used together – are your secret weapon. They will help you be more healthy, help you control hunger and cravings, and help you lose weight. That sounds simple, but learning what fits in each category and then implementing it is a little more challenging. Here are some of the basics. Protein: This is the building block for muscle. Protein is also great for filling you up and sparing muscle if your overall calorie intake is reduced. Your best protein sources come from animal products. Protein could be meat, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy, etc. There are vegetable proteins, but most are not complete proteins – meaning that they don’t contain all the amino acids. The trick with protein is getting quality without going overboard on fat. Take a hamburger, for example. It is an excellent source of protein, however, the fat grams are often nearly as high as the protein grams. Use high fat meats more sparingly. By William Bower
